Vehicle Safety Study by Color

I'm quite surprised by this. On cloudy/rainy days especially, silver gray vehicles are harder to see
than brightly colored vehicles.

I suspect that the personalities of those who purchase silver gray vehicles tends to run on the
conservative/cautious side...therefore they're less likely to cut others off, swerve suddenly, drive
too fast for the conditions, run red lights, etc...in other words, they are less likely to find
themselves in situations where they will get hit.

This is sheer speculation, of course, but it makes common sense. It is obvious to me that when I
drive down the street, silver cars do not stand out as much as yellow or red ones.

Note that for cyclists, the largest bit of surface area visible to others is the cyclist
him/herself. If we were to blindly follow the conclusions of that study, we'd all be wearing silver
gray jackets. And traffic cones wouldn't be bright orange.

Me, I'll stick to fluorescent yellow and day-glo orange for my kit, thank you. The bike color really
isn't that important (in fact, the trike I'm getting next month happens to be silver).

Maybe this is why fire trucks and safety cones are always painted Silver
Grey? :-)

I like the fluorescent colors,oft refered to around here as OSHA colors. What kind of trike are

what kind = same ones as last year, but they are undergoing the last bout of welding surgery before
the paint goes on. One trike has SRAM drums and the other has disc brakes. I was thinking your Tulpa
Orange but the wife hates Orange. I narrowed it down to Silver or Lime Green...IF they can get it
Mirror-like it might be nice.

OT..I got about 20 emails from people asking me what kind of bent is on my home page and only one
email saying...nice road and who makes the orange bent LOL.

I reckon the British study dealt with a lot of very dark colored cars, Black English taxi cabs etc.

Are you aware it is against the law in Britain for a cyclist to "attach" a red flashing tail light
to their bicycle. You can attach one to your clothes or helmet...but to the bike frame or a
tailbox...no idea who made up that stupid law, but I'll bet they don't drive a bike at night/ "Lewis

I didn't even know you had a homepage?! So what is the URL? As for drums vs. disc, I think that
engineering for discs is a bit more difficult, but drums seem to be on the way out. At least,
availability in North America is limited. Discs are everywhere.

It is also illegal in Ontario. I have never heard of a cyclist being charged though and when I
consulted a few local cops- the sentiment was that each of them was just glad that a cyclist was
using lighting at all.

Yep, the one I asked you permisiision to use a few months ago because I fell in love with the road
and being a city boy almost any road with trees looks great....and when ever you wanna see the front

Hi Jay

2 years ago the Toronto Police went out of there way to nail cyclists and did these R.I.D.E. type
spot checks on bike routes. The routes were where cyclists got hit by cars the most. The police had
a check list that included a working horn or bell, working front clear and rear red lamp. IF you did
not have any of the 3 safety items....you got a $$ traffic fine and lost points on your car
licence...the police told me that a 2nd spot check within 30 days and a cyclist still had not added
the safety items will see the bike being impounded and sold at a public auction.

Personally I like to look like a Xmas tree because of all thise dark tinted windshields.

Under Funny Laws...British Columbia has ruled that the "Legally Blind" cannot lose their driver
licence to drive a car, truck or School bus...WOW and B.C. has all season cycling.
