seems the speculation on danielson's not racing was true: he
had work permit problems, as has christian vande velde.

to be honest i was slightly surprised that fassa and liberty
didn't look into this/sort it out at the end of 2003.

it makes me wonder if leipheimer is registered in the
netherlands or spain. speaking from personal experience,
it's relatively easy to get an annual residence permit in NL
(as a US citizen, and with a lawyer, albeit time consuming)
as long as you make more than 600+ euros a month.

Since he's working for Rabobank, if the team is registered
in NL, the article would imply he needs to be permitted
    from there.

Thanks for the link, BTW. So it seems Danielson's absence
isn't anything long term. At least he wasn't declared an
    enemy combattant.

While that's the implication, the fact is that if you're out
of the netherlands for more than 6 months, you're residence
permit is voided. I would venture the guess that
Leipheimer's visits to NL are for racing and the occasional
    team gathering.

Is it a case of naivety on Vande Velde's part? Apparently
Leipheimer (unless he's one of the 26,000 getting deported
by Blakende) AND Hamilton apparently have taken care of the
situation. Maybe the teams took care of it for them?

Whatever the case, that's the last thing a professional
athlete would want to deal with in the midst of the season.

  5. I think you may have touched on a point to watch in the
future. With Spain's newly elected socialist, anti-Iraq-war
president, there could be shift to a more anti-American
    attitude throughout the country.

Where will the Gerona cycling crowd move to next? Back to
    Nice? Time will tell.

Will the new government increase funding for Spanish doping
    control programs?

Have you ever been to spain, or europe for that matter?
spain's population has been anti-american (government) ever
since eisenhower visited franco, if not before.

    and it's not anti-americanism that's put vande velde&
danielson in this situation, it's the fact that liberty and
fassa didn't even ask about their legal status. as i
mention, maybe the two guys were slightly naive, but the
team organizations also share some responsibility.

  8. I remember seeing the Nimitz a couple of times in Mallorca,
so they can't be too anti-American.

They've been anti-American since the Spanish American war.
(We also bought Louisanna from France, while they were
    renting it from Spain.)

  10. Man, what a [censored].

Yes, I have been over there. Have you?

The facts are that recently (not talking about 50 year old
grudges) our cycling boys have been settling in there.
Perhaps you're not familiar with the term Nationalism? Not
withstanding the errors made by the two riders mentioned,
the point was raised about potential trends in the political
atmosphere. So get your head out of your ass.

    Putz.

    Putz.

looks like someone has their knickers in a twist.

certainly aware of the term nationalism. i see more than i
can stomach back home in the USofA.

My point is that i don't see the Posties, or any other
cyclist who's team have taken care of business as having a
problem. the tightening of immigration laws are attributed
to the EU, 'security', and a rise in xenophobia in Europe
(not to mention the US). how else would you explain the fact
that the netherlands in deporting 26,000 asylum seekers?

as for the rest, go f@ck yourself

  12. Dumbasses,

only dumbasses seek anti-americanism in this. If there are
    new, stricter regulations
    1. they are there because of tight-assness over immigration
    and security reasons, and
    2. they apply to all non-EU residents.

Just because these 2 (and their teams) overlooked it,
    doesn't mean there's more it.

goed gezegt. at least maneer van hoorbeek gets it.

  14. Oh I "get" what you are saying. Unfortunately some people
[you] can't follow a particular point, which in this case
had nothing to do with the paperwork issue but the overall
political atmosphere in Spain these days.

Feel free to discuss whatever you wish, but please refrain
from bastardizing threads made by others.
