  1. (Second Q this evening, so thank you and bear with me)

If I want to put presta valved inner tubes onto rims designed for schraeder
tubes, do I need to put little grommets in the holes to stop the valves
    wiggling about?

And if so, what are they called and where can I get them from (apart from my
    LBS).

    If I should use them - and I currently don't - what might/will happen...

    Thanks

    Peter

    Have a look at:

I've used them before with no ill effects at all.

I have used a schraeder drilled rim with presta valves (1 1/4" tyres so
not very high pressure). You might want to check the valve hole for
sharp edges and file down if necessary I suppose

I've noticed them at unicycle.uk.com for 35p each:

Like James, though, I've used Presta valves in Schraeder drilled tubes
    without any problems.

I have used these grommets but my experience was that they don't make much
    difference.

I've certainly ridden for many hundreds of mile with presta valves in
schraeder sized holes and never had a problem.

The bike shop I use in Brighton is primarily a mountain bike type of a place
and they say it is very common indeed for their customers to use the presta
valves with schraeder sized holes and there doesn't seem to be a problem.

One criticism of those grommets is that I've personally found that with some
rims they can make getting the tube in to the rim very slightly irksome.
Depending on the situation you might like to file the schraeder hole very
very slightly larger; it only needs to be increased in size by an extremely
small amount, then the grommet will work much more easily. It might very well
be that the holes in your rims will work absolutely fine without any
modification at all however and it could be that the rims I used them on had
slightly smaller schraeder holes than normal.

In favour of the grommets personally I do think they look much nicer than
    presta valves in schraeder holes.

  6. I just use electrical grommets and I don't bother fitting them flush
with the rim I just slide them over the presta valve and use the wee
locking ring to hold it down onto the rim.

All I want it to do is keep the water and grot out of the hole and
centralise the valve reasonably. Works a treat and they're WAY lass
than a quid each from the likes of Maplins. I found some in a drawer at
work where I keep a huge assortment of nuts, bolts , washers and other
    goodies.

  7. On this topic, I have just woken up to the availability of Presta valves
on 26" inner tubes. I much prefer them, is there any advantage in using
    Schraeders?

I think schraeders are fitted so that people can pump their tyres up at
petrol stations. I don't use petrol for my bicycle so I am not in petrol
    stations very often.

My guess is that if you are the type who drives to somewhere with the bicycle
on a rack on the car before riding it then maybe you'd find it handy to pump
up the tyres at a petrol station whilst filling the car.

For using a hand pump schraeder valves are a bit more resistant than presta
valves which is why I don't like them personally.

Does Presta means something like quick in Spanish, whereas Schraeder is, I
    think, a German name.
Doesn't really answer the question, I'm afraid...

They fill the hole in the rim.
You can inflate them with a regular car footpump or air line.
You can fit funky valve caps.

There's no overwhelming advantage to either type. I like to have Prestas on
my mountain bikes because I keep my pumps set up for Prestas, but
    Schraeders work all right.

I personally hate Schraeder - I've never really developed the knack of
pumping them up without removing more air than I put in. As for rims, I've
tightened down the lock ring too much before & sheared the valve base away
from the rubber - instant tube right-off.

Rubber grommets are just about better than nothing - the best solution are
Nylon inserts but are amonst the items that rarely get shown in catalogues
    (along with cable end ferrules).

They're not a good solution for high pressure low volume tyres.

Lock rings serve no real purpose and they can't be fitted to some valves
    anyway. I never use them.
