Big bend NP sounds nice if you're not into winter sports, though it can get cold there if you happen
to hit it wrong. For a winter trip, skiing would be my personal choice.

Free ticket to "anywhere?" Anywhere's a pretty big place. In the winter, if "anywhere" might include
Hawaii, why not spend the week on Kaui (and ride up Waimea Canyon)? Or something in the Carribean.

I'd probably do Hawaii too -- Maui -- and ride up Haleakala.

If the ticket is really to *anywhere,* I'd probably go to New Zealand or Australia.

I agree. Hawai'i is a pretty wonderful place. Then we spent our 20th wedding anniversary in Tahiti
(Bora-Bora, specifically).

The best part was when my wife called me a few months later and told me that she won free tickets
back to Tahiti (KQED bingo card in the mail).

Both trips were wonderful and all the requested activities (cycling, touring, hiking,
snorkeling/swimming) were available.

I shouldn't be including JPGs, but they are small. Here's a bicycling group on Tahiti (the main
island) at a water stop. And a photo of me (on Moorea) wearing a Primavera Century t-shirt next to a
"no bicycling" sign that didn't come out very well in the photo (even with full resolution). They
guy (on the sign) is really sweating, however.

I just got back from Costa Rica. Everything is green and beautiful as the dry season (summer) just
started. I would recommend staying in the Central Valley and riding/hiking in the highlands. Then,
you could head to the beach (about a 1 hour drive) for some kayaking. Or, you could do rapids on one
of the rivers in the valley....feel free to email me off list for specific suggestions.

I'd be tempted to check out New Mexico, and dig some of the Native arts & crafts -- especially
the weaving.

But I'm just a Canadian, and the furthest stateside I've been is Seattle. Still, I have this
intuitive feeling that NM could be a pretty good adventure. Maybe even a pilgrimage of sorts. My
gut tells me Albequrque is just another city, but traveling to/from/between Santa Fe and Taos
might be fun.

OTOH, I could very well be wrong.

Anyway, it would be lovely to get up close to some of that wonderful Native woolcraft.

I bet there's all kinds of rock hound/lapidary possibilities there, too.

AT 7,000 feet, Santa Fe is going to be just a bit chilly this time of year.

Tucson area would be great for biking - but not much water. ALso some hiking, especially if you like
the desert clime and topography.

As I remember Big Bend, it does not have much water, either.

I just checked Yahoo Weather. Santa Fe today has a high of 39 F, low of 14 F, and winds 20-30
mph.The forecast for tomorrow is that it will get colder, and will get some snow flurries.

We were just in Phoenix last weekend, and it was sunny, in the upper 60s and lower 70s. My kids said
they wanted to go to the Grand Canyon. I showed them a weather map from the newspaper. Like Santa
Fe, that region of Arizona is in the Rocky Mountains as opposed to the low desert. They could see
that the highs would have been in the 30s, the lows in the teens, and decided they might want to
take that trip during a different time of the year.

Don't know how you are going to get a plane ticket to Big Bend. The nearest regional is probably
200 miles away. I'm thinking Big Spring/Midland but perhaps there is an airport in Ft.
Davis/Marfa/Alpine. The nearest major airport would be El Paso, and it would be a 10 hour drive
from there. Big Bend is a nice place but very remote. If you do chose Big Bend you should be
familiar with emergency bike repairs as you will be nowhere near a bike shop and could be stranded
on a road for days before a car drives by. There are road and mountain biking opportunities but be
sure to carry proof of citizenship/legal residency with you as the area is heavily patrolled by the
Border Patrol.

There is probably not enough water in the river for whitewater rafting or canoeing. There are
however many great hiking opportunities.

Despite the songs and previous experience, you will not be able to legally cross into Mexico in the
Big Bend area. Well actually the problem is with crossing back into the U.S.A.

As much as I love Big Bend, I think Corpus Christi would be the better Texas option.

If your Canadian and enjoy cycling in the freezing wind it might be fun. In Taos now is the time for
skiing, not cycling.

You could fly to El Paso and tour Southern New Mexico throughout the week. Your ride could follow
the Rio Grande (dry right now) through Las Cruces up to Ft. Seldon State Park or Elephant Butte
State Park. From there you could ride through Silver City (more camping opportunities in the Gila
National Forest) to Deming. If you are into rock hounding there is the City of Rocks State Park
north of Deming and Rock Hound State Park south of Deming.

From Deming back to El Paso would be a long ride with little opportunity for food, water, or
camping. But you could take a bus back to El Paso for less than $50.
