  1. Hi,

Can I fit 'V brakes' on my mtb that originally had cantilever brakes?

I need to renew the levers and they all seem to be 'V brake' type.

    Cheers

    Andy

canti bosses are canti bosses, universal thread and position [kind of] and will take V brakes no
problem...but you'll need the levers too, due to the increase cable travel.

not trying to diswade you but cantis can be set up to be pretty damn good too. there is an url
floating around somewhere by an American who vaunts this very practice. somebody might post it.

Thanks mate, I need to get new shifters anyway, and as they are part of the brakes [which are also
dying] I thought I'd do the lot.

I'll look forward to the url if posted!

    Thanks again

  4. Hi, it's on the Keith Bontrager site.

    bontrager.comrants.asp

I experimented with his advice using the tektro brake cable hanger. It allowed easy and accurate
cable adjustment. It sort of worked. You need to keep them adjusted, but then I am sure there are
plenty of poorly adjusted 'V' brakes around anyway.

'V' brakes may just be easier in the end, however, it can be fun to buck the trend.

If you want 'V' brakes then maybe give Avids a go. Buy something that is in the mid-range. I use
them and have found them to be excellant. You may be able to pick up an unused bargain on ebay, but
watch out for the P&P. Check how much it would take wiggle to deliver to put it all into
    perspective.

    Have fun.

    RobH.

It's kind of hard work ploughing through all his hyperbole[boy, is his full of himself :-], but in
the end, it's a good article, and well worth a read.

Not trying to diswade you from V's, just try re-setting your original cantis first.

Too damned right they're easier. Having struggled to get the cantis on my bike and my wife's to
work well, I was stunned at how well vees performed when I replaced my bike with something newer.
So much that I replaced the brakes on my wife's bike with the cheapest vees I could find and the
    improvement was huge.

Note that Keith's rant seems to be about the original, expensive Shimano vees with the parallel
linkage. I tried XTs, ignoring the warnings about squealing problems and had to give up on the front
in the end as it was just embarassingsly noisy. Replaced the fronts with Avid Arch Rivals and never
    looked back.

Yes, maybe you can get cantis to work well, but it's not easy, whereas vees are such a piece of cake
    to adjust if required.

If anyone's interested, you can have my old original STX-RC levers and vee brakes for the cost of
postage. Also a little used XT vee brake for a tenner?

He also publishes a short version 'for people who don't have time to read':

My mum built up a frame using v brakes with canti-levers. The man in th LBS bends her ear each time she brings it in for a service but she isn't keen to change as she is used to the performance characteristics and the braking power is fine for CC touring.

If you want really really good and easy-to-maintain brakes, consider the Magura HS-11. Fitting is
a bit fiddly but after that, they're virtually maintenance-free. Apart from the odd brake shoe
    now and then.

I replaced the canti brakes on my hack bike with a Shimano V brake conversion kit, because I
couldn't even get blocks for the canti brakes any more. It was easy to do, not expensive, and the V
brakes are much easier to set up and adjust.
