If you look closely at Lance's skinsuit, there is a rectangular box underneath the suit right above where a normal jersey has its center pocket. I have long suspected that Lance uses some kind of telemetry for his pulse and possibly other signals (cadence, velocity, etc. but all of those can be calculated by observation). Does anyone know if this is the case? The reason I suspect this is that I hear his HR number quoted from races where he has no visible HRM. Maybe he wears an HRM watch for his use (I doubt he looks though) and it is also sent to the team to record and place in his tracking database. I know they use one and I can't figure out any other way for them to get that info from him while he is racing.

Yeah, good point. I did think of that too. It was pretty big for receive only but maybe that is all they have (2 way). I saw the earpiece (that thing looked like a hearing aid) and it looked almost like it could have been a one piece receiver because it had a wire hanging from it that could have been an antennae for reception only. That box was definitely big enough to have a transmitter for voice communication and any other signal.
Maybe Jeff knows?

I thought the use of telemetry was common knowledge. I can't imagine a team not using it nowadays, it would be too tedious to be counting cadence and speed real-time. Now they can measure power output too.

You are correct, and it's sent to Dr. Ferrari in Italy every day for feedback.

Believe it or not, all the data is sent to Dr. Ferrari in Italy. Crawford has quite a long explanation on one of the websites...

I aw that too. My guess is that it is just his two way radio. ----------- Alex

Lance doesn't look like he's wearing a Polar chest strap -- e.g., the pix of him climbing with his jersey open -- does he have another type of heart rate monitor?

Which could be used to send telemetry along with voice.

Yes, most of the big teams transmit heartrate etc. If you read Lances book, he tells of his "coach" or manager back in the car telling him it's OK to attack or don't go now, HR's to high etc. He says at one point the manager said it was ok to go cause his HR was only 180. The manager also advised him on occasion that cadence was too high. All this was during his first victory in 99.
