Using cycle pump on car tyres

  1. Hi, I have a good quality (nearly 40 quid) metal floor standing cycle
    pump which requires a two handed operation to inflate my cycle tyres.
    Could I use this pump to inflate my car tyres which have the same
    valve type as my bike or does somebody know of any reason why i
    should'nt?

    None at all. I've just bought an extra pump to keep in the car. Just as
    quick as the garage air-hose, the gauge is more accurate, and you can do
    it whereever you are. Highly recommended.

    Hand or foot pumping car tyres from flat takes ages, but an occasional
    top-up is quick and easy.

    I have a cheap track pump from argos and it doesn't seem to take any
    longer than a foot pump to pump my car tyre from flat.

    I think the diameter of the barrel is too big for proper pressures on a
    bike.

    Also I don't see why you would have heat problems as car tyres are low
    pressure 2 bar compared to the 8+ bar on a road bike.

    The equation you want is P1V1 over T1 equals P2V2 over T2

    P pressure in pascals
    V volume in cubic metres
    T temperature in kelvin.

    The problem with using bicycle pumps with car tyres is that the guage may
    not be accurate at low pressure (or at any pressure). So it would be wise
    to check with a high-quality separate guage. (This is not so important for
    bicycle tyres, IMO).

    handle to get a high pressure.

    But if the barrel is large in diameter *and* long (like my Silca's), then
    it's capable of quick inflation *and* high pressure.

    Well I don't know about you Pete but for those of us who haven't eaten
    all the pies a large diameter does make high pressures problematic.

    My pump has a diameter of 3.5cm which means all my weight (11.5 stone)
    will only get the tyre up to about 105 psi.

    Actually this doesn't really help as we don't know V2 in comparison to V1.

    The point is that if a pump is both large in diameter AND long, then it's
    capable of both pumping a bike tyre to high pressure AND pumping up a car
    tyre reasonably quickly.

    Silca Pista barrel is 32mm (externally), 62cm long, 150 psi no problem for
    11.5 stone.

    I'm told that my 46cm is perfectly adequate.

    Could you propose a theory as to why length makes a difference?
