I am just starting to think about getting going with road biking and unfortunately know next to nothing about it. Thats where you come in! A friend of mine who rides suggested I start off with a used bike as it will save me some scratch (which I don't have a lot of) and he claims that good used bikes aren't that tough to find. I have seen so many postings on this site about getting a bike that fits you properly though that I am skeptical at best, about my ability to find an appropriate fit with a used bike. What do you folks think; are used bikes viable options for beginers or would I best be served by getting a slightly more expensive new bike at a LBS and making sure its an appropriate fit for me? Also, if the used bike route is ok, where would I look for one? Thanks! Holla at your boy Aaron
First, figure out what size bike you're looking for. www.wrenchscience.com has a good fit calculator that will give you a starting point. Unless you're much taller or shorter than average you should be able to find a used bike with the right size frame. You may need to swap the stem and maybe the bars to dial in the fit, but it's going to be much cheaper than buying new.

Definitely go with used. If you are anything like me it might take a month or two of riding before you know which way you want to go. So a good used bike makes good sense. Once you know where you stand, then spend the $$$ on a new bike, if necessary.
One important thing though; if you don't know what to look for in a used bike (i.e. to judge the condition of the frame, drivetrain, rims, etc.) then take someone along with you who does, when you check out the bike for fit, etc.
You can get some great deals on second hand bikes, but it can be a bitter pill to swallow if a few weeks after buying your bike, that you're up for a new chain/cassette/etc., or theres a frame fault you didn't notice when checking it out..
The points from other posters regarding buying a cheap second hand bike for you to explore what kind of riding you like best, is a very good one.
