If I have read the selection criteria correctly, there will
be no discretionary picks to the team unless one of the
automatic qualifiers turns down their spot.
Here is a link to the qualifying regs:

if you think I have misread it.
By my reckoning, the five slots are already allocated to
automatic qualifiers. In order of priority:
1. The winner of the trials race in June.
2. Armstrong (from grand tour 1st)
3. Hamilton (from grand tour 4th)
4. Julich (from 2.hc 3rd)
5. Hincapie (from 2.hc 5th)
The only way that Freddy Rodriguez, Danielson, Landis,
Leipheimer, Horner, or anyone else is getting on the team is
to win the trials or to place in the top five of a grand
tour, world cup, 1.hc, or 2.hc race by July 5. Actually,
some of these guys are capable of doing it, and have done it
in past years: Freddy (2nd in Milan-SanRemo, Gent-Wevelgem),
Floyd (2nd in Dauphine), and Levi (3rd in Vuelta).
All right! We have a nice little horse race going, with no
chance of any officials getting to play favorites. I think
I'll email a few of the top riders to let them know, just in
case they were unaware.
