i think lance has the $ to get the best coaches....why do his coaches have him doing this if its no good and a waste of time? to be truthful, i dont know, or care. all i was wondering, is why these few recreational riders won do movements like these. i hope this video of lance workout out with weights for his entire body comes up..
Leanman, do you know how many decoy vids like this one all the pros use ? How do you know he actually really does this ? I can tell you this, all that upper body work doesn't make his pedals turn any faster.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that's the case for everyone. Besides, the entire thread has been about upper body training, which generally a gym or indoor activity.
Most high performance cyclists avoid upper body work as they have to cart that dead weight uphill. You should find a riding position that supports the upper body as best as possible so the so the primary focus is power delivery from the lower body. Check out the writings of Steve Hogg on the differences between postural muscles and phasic muscles. Even the Australian Sprint Cycling Team stopped doing large amounts of upper body work as it was extra weight to accelerate off the line, bigger bodies meant more frontal area and bigger bodies can mean a less aero position can be achieved.

...Out on the road, you don't have to see Biff pumping himself in front of a mirror; Tad and Percy trying to out flex each other in front of Buffy....or Dwayne; or all those droids with their heads impaled on ear buds or stair stepping as they surf the net.
You don't necessarily come across those things in a gym either, you just have to go to the right one. The key is to do your 'gym shopping' around the times you plan on being there so you know who you'll be around, that way you can pick a gym with clientele that you will fit in with.
OTOH, if you prefer to keep mainly to yourself, a gym may not be for you.

No thanks. I'll stick with the outdoors thing. I could never get into the gym thing, whether the gym was empty, full, or replete with professional cheerleaders.
