You're quite right, there usually is more to it than that.
How many cogs/chain rings is your friend's set of index
shifters designed to handle? 7, 8, 9 or 10 in back? 2 or 3
in front? How many cogs / chain rings does your old bike
have? 5, 6, 7 or 8 in back? 2 or 3 in front? What make are
your friend's index shifters? What make are the derailleurs
on your Cannondale?
Newer derailleurs (after about 1988) are indeed shaped
differently than older ones (you don't say how old your
Cannondale is), just as you surmised.
The combined index shifters/brake levers on modern road
bikes are nice for road racers, but otherwise index shifting
is just not that big a deal, IMHO.
If you're happy with your Cannondale, keep riding it, and
keep it in good repair as long as you can. If you really
feel the need for index shifting, buy a new bike. HTH,
