  1. I've got an old bike that has a 1" threaded headset and alloy forks. I want
to get a new set of forks and, while I'm at it, upgrade to 1" Ahead
    threadless.

Can I just go out and buy the new forks, headset, spacers and stem and put
it all together, or is it more involved than that?

    Thanks

    That's it, in principle.

If you've installed headsets before (and can get all bearing races to
lie exactly in plane with each other) then threadless is no more
complicated than threaded. In my case, fitting headset bearing races is
the *only* job that I take to my LBS, because I don't want the expense
of buying the tools to get the races perfectly parallel . . .

If you haven't adjusted threadless before, the correct sequence: tighten
steerer cap before tightening stem bolts. Finally, back off the tension
on the steerer cap bolt a bit; its function is minimal once the stem
    bolts are tight.

Yes, it will work, as long as your bike wasn't set up for a JIC
headset, which it most likely wasn't. If it was, the head tube can be
reamed to accept the more common 30.2mm OD headset cups used with the
    majority of 1" headsets.

Some of us do not call threadless an "upgrade"; it limits the stem
height adjustability, and there are more reports of looseness in the
bearings with threadless than with threaded headsets. Your opinion
    may vary.

    and perhaps just as important:

Bear the latter's admonitions in mind before deciding what to do.

I don't have it handy at the moment, but I seem to recall that Nashbar had a
JIS Aheadset in their current catalog that was reasonably priced - about $20
or so. If the OP has a JIS headset (perhaps most easily determined by
measuring the crown race diameter) then that might be the easiest route to
    take.

    Tom

He's looking to change forks; in that instance, the JIS headset's
probably not going to do him any good since he's not likely to find a
replacement fork that's sized for one.

It's a low-probability issue anyway, though not nonexistent. I've got
a JIS-sized suspension fork out in the garage that I took back off of
a Trek that somebody had tried to put it on.

What makes you think that threadless is an upgrade?

  7. Sorry, perhaps a poor choice of words. My newer bike has Ahead and I'm more
familiar with it, since i never had to pull apart the old one (civil
    negligence case pending).

Thanks to all who responded, I can go shopping now :-)
