Do any riders have the shoe cleat positioned closer to the arch of the foot, rather than at the ball
of the foot? Any advantage or disadvantage?

I put mine a bit farther back because I was having trouble with the heel of my size 12 (european 48)
feet hitting my panniers.I have done several very long rides and almost 3000 Km since and have and my feet are fine.

Sheldon Brown has been a proponent of moving cleats further back. See his Web site
(www.sheldonbrown.com). -
Visualize running with a lump under your arch so that the impact and weight is borne there rather
than under the ball of your foot.

I've had a sore right foot after rides for a few weeks and decided to change my cleat placement. Lo,
the cleat had slid as far back as it could, on both shoes. I moved them back and tightened the
screws securely before a 50+ mile ride today. Vast improvement. More efficient strokes, less pain.
