  1. Just found out the answer to two questions at once. (a) why are the brake blocks rubbing? and (b)
    what that's rythmic tyre/mudguard sound?

Rear wheel is out of true; quite a bit but not time to detach the v-brakes yet. My Q: will it last
till I can get it to a bike shop at the weekend? Is catastrophic failure likely/possible?

Bloody bikes. Only 3000 miles on the clock and a full maintenance regime (ie 3 drops 3-in-1 every
month) and the bloody things knackered.

I bent my (MTB) front wheel badly enough to rub against the forks once. Bashed it back into shape
good enough to ride without doing final adjustments with a spoke key because I didn't have one at
the time. Lasted fine for another year or so until the brake blocks finally wore the rim so thin
that it split. I believe in getting my money's worth out of kit.

Catastrophic failure is unlikely, but why not give it a tweak with yoru spoke key and get it
    more-or-less true straight away?

Machine-built wheels. They suck. I always have the wheels retensioned by hand on any new bike unless
    it has hand-built wheels.

Depends what caused the wheel to be out of true. You'll probably be ok for a few more days at least
as long as no spokes are extremely loose or broken and the rim isn't disintegrating.

No broken spokes? It'll pobably be OK for a few days, but go gently until the weekend. In the
meantime if any spokes are obviously loose it wouldn''t hurt to tighten them up.

All sorted. I had a look and found a broken spoke so got it hastily to the LBS.

They did a sterling job for 31UKP; full service, new brake blocks, replaced headset[1], new spoke &
wheel true. And all done in one morning.

And Mr. Bike Shop (who runs the shop with Mrs Bike Shop - it's that sort of place) pointed out that
the chain and block were 3/4 gone, "particularly the high gears".

    It feels like new.
