Ungridded road maps!

    I'm sure some of you travel the country in motor cars, using road maps of various kinds, and aided
    now and then by your handy hillwalking GPSR which can tell you exactly where you are -- in OS grid
    co-ordinates.

    Is my aging memory betraying me, or is it really the case that as GPSRs are becoming more
    commonplace, more and more publishers of road maps are omitting properly numbered OS gridding from
    their maps? I seem to recall I used to be able to select a few OS gridded road maps from those on
    sale, and then compare them to see which one I would prefer to buy. Now I find it very hard to find
    *any* road map with properly labelled OS gridding.

    Is this some kind of marketing trick to try to force people to buy expensive electronic duplicates
    of their paper maps?

    Appologies if this is common knowledge........It is possible to get a grid references from post
    codes, I use OS getamap, enter the postcode and it returns the grid ref, can be very useful in
    finding addresses with the hand held.......can be quite entertaining when stuck on a one way system
    knowing that your target is 250 meters behind!.....This is probably the only real use I ever had out
    of my gps, and now not needed, my new car has the whole

    I have never bought a road map that has OS related grid information on it. The more common practice
    is to use a per-page number/letter grid for locating settlements from the index and nothing more.

    I have several, including the AA one, which show the grids, I use them to scan in as index maps in
    OziExplorer. Not sure about the latest, and I haven't seen any for £1.99, which many discount book
    shops used to sell.

    I assume that will be 'grumpy old man' after the current (excellent) TV series. I used this acronym
    in a newsgroup posting within a few hours of the first program being broadcast last Friday, but I'm

    The series I have been looking for in vain in local shops is the excellent Geographers A-Z series of
    maps and atlases. Not only do they include numbered OS gridding for easy use with a GPSR, but they
    contain a lot more topgraphical detail, and more details of the layout of complex road junctions,
    than most other maps of nominally equal or even larger scale. For example, when navigating on a
    recent car journey I junked the large road atlas (substantially bigger than A4) offered me by the
    driver in favour of my old pocketable A-Z "Handy Road Atlas" (roughly A5 in size) because it
    actually offered more useful navigational detail despite being much smaller in both size and scale.

    They're more expensive than some of the others, which may explain their scarcity in my local shops,
    but they are IMHO a much superior product. I bothered to find the above URL (which sells them),
    because I've yet to find better road maps for use in conjuction with a GPSR by someone who has a
    walker's interest in off-road features.
