  1. Decided to head down to Portsea today, via Arthurs Seat and the back roads, but on the way down went the Safety beach route.... has anybody been down there lately ??? They have a Tunnel, Safety beach has a tunnel, its not looooong but its still a tunnel, all part of the Marina Cove development down there..... which leads to the orginal point of this thread......

In the space of turning off to towards Safety Beach after Mount Martha and getting to Safety beach, I was almost run off the road by 4 dump trucks, 1 threatened to come straight out on the road and flatten me, and another turned off behind me that close to me, im sure I could smell the B.O of the truck driver..... wont be going via Safety Beach for a very long time.... 🙁

im sure a cyclist has already been killed around there this year...

There was a cyclist death in that area earlier this year - I'll try to find the details if other people don't recall them.

Regardless - you should directly follow up this altercation with the dump truck company and also report this incident to the local police. Please let us know how you go. 😉

Is it the "Martha Cove" development? If so, here's some *light reading material* for your perusal:

cheers...that is the development, i cant believe such a wonderul spot is going to be turned into a bastardised Gold coast canal town, such as shame but I guess all people involved are making a nice tidy profit, I intend to send them my comments tomorrow...

someone told me years ago (my mum?) that afety Beach was renamed by developers cos the exsting name wouldnt help sales. the name you ask?
"Shark Bay" (or beach or something involving sharks)
Sit up on Arthurs Seat on a clear day and you can see the buggars cruising along in the shallows. My eldest was in a sailing thing there last summer and madness broke out as someone spotted a huge one shadowing their group. Lots of noise, colour and movement. poor sodding shark. just going for a noice 'ride' with his BR (or BS?) gang and gets made to 'move along' 🙄

yeah I have heard that as well and I must admit, they never have triathlons down there and when ever I am down there, I never see people in the water..... but then im not down there 24/7..... but I have definately heard that rumour as well.... be more worried about the sharks and the works going on down there now.

yeah, now they have the marina cove and murky still dark water, the sharks are going to love it for their holiday breeding rituals and nursery antics....maybe a white shoed highly tanned developer will dip a toe and find it missing....oops

as for the tunnel, its actually a hoot to whiz into, great descent and like Oliver's Hill you can crank some speed comin down off Mt Martha ... and the servo just past the tunnel is a good turn round after a neat 50Klms one way from the clock tower at black rock, great 100klm round trip...

now as for the road and trucks...the local polly ( upper house Robin Rightwingsomething) is very anti cycling on his "Esplanade", last year he came out in the press totally against cyclists on the road between Mornington and Safety beach ( sorry didnt keep the press-clip, but it was big news on BVs site for a while and they called on anyone down there to write to the jerk and put him straight, which I did, and which he took offence at...funny that!), he is anti bikes there mainly because his developer mate's trucks were being forced to observe the traffic laws and not cross yellow lines or speed when they came across a bunch but heaven help the lone cyclist they heavied.... this pollie actually wanted to ban all bikes from the road .....as his main solution, he didnt offer any constructive suggestion on traffic managment or road sharing, just a ban.... so hopefully some more reasonable and balanced individual might just do him out of a job in politics, sooner rather than later....

off soapbox....but hey dont ignore that road or the tunnel, it is a great ride, a superb view and why not go and enjoy it, its not just for stuck up politicians and their mates.😄 😄

  10. I don't ride this way since they started the tunnel works. It was very
messy for quite a long time. It doesn't surprise me that one of those
trucks totalled a cyclist. I keep to the Nepean Highway - it has one of
those nasty "virtual" bike lanes - what is it with the dotted line?
Half bicyle in this lane ?

There does seem to be some sort of natural justice in the thought that
the new effluent residents of Safety Beach will provide some important
nutrition to the sharks. "Real estate sharks, eaten by sharks".

Actually looking at it, I would rank it next to Noosa as an ugly
sprawl that deserves to be the "slums of the future". Best avoided for
    all purposes.
