There was I cycling along, not a care in the world when the rim (ie breaking surface) of my rear wheel disintegrated strip wise around part of the wheel. The strip fouled the brake, the inner tube popped out and exploded and the bike stopped dead.
Fortunately I was doing 2 mph on Kingston Bridge at the time not 30mph on the Downs in Wimbledon, so no harm was done.
Too much cycling on towpath grinding paste me thinks!
The upside is that worn out rims, worn smooth knobblies & drive chain with too may miles means that the cost of repair would be prohibitive & I'll have to buy a new bike instead!

Ouch! What are the tell-tale signs of an imminent collapse that can be spotted when inspecting a rim? Most books just say look for wear...

I had a cheap tube on the road bike go bang in the kitchen one night. Took me ages to work out what had happened. Nearly shat meself too!

I'd recommend wearing ear defenders and safety glasses, especially if you're doing this in a confined space. :-)

Certain types of rim have a wear indicator, in the form of a notch that appears as the rim wears and/or a label on the eyelet surface with indicator markings showing how far the rim can wear before it should be replaced. My Mavics have the label. You can also feel for hollowness I believe, but having never worn out a rim I haven't tried this.

ISTM that's when the manufacturer would like you to replace the rim, rather than when you actually need a new one. :-)

I had a tyre sidewall failure on Wednesday morning. I'd just stopped at a traffic light (even in London we do sometimes ;o))and bang! At first I though it was a firework.
That was at the bottom of a hill so I guess I was lucky too.

I had a front wheel sidewall and tube fail explosively going down a steep stony firetrack at speed on a tandem in Finland. Stopping was interesting which my daughter on the back described as scary.

Scary thought isn't it. 30mph with a non rotating rear wheel!
Been there done that. Flying down the south downs when the forward lower rear mudguard clip[1] lets go and the mudguard pops out and wraps around the rear wheel locking it solid in a nano second. 2 seconds of apocolyptic fish-tailing follwed by a *big* bang, another 5 seconds of worse fish tailing and an eventual stop amid blue smoke and burnt rubber. Still, my B17 was brown before I started...

I pumped just a plain inner-tube up 'till it went bang once. That was in my garage with the door open - my head rang for some time after, and my hearing was out for a little while too. My wife in the house (detached from the garage, so sound having penetrated garage wall, crossed intervening space and entered through house wall) reported the bang was worryingly loud.
A confined inner-tube will probably go to higher pressure and make a bigger bang. Be cautious.

I've had that on a fast downhill bend on a road bike. Stopping was, as you say, interesting, although somehoe I stayed upright. Manufacturing fault in a new tyre (well, it had been sold as a second).
