Will I need to take out chain links for this 4 tooth
(outer ring) change? Also, will I need to lower the front
derailleur? I'm thinking that 4 teeth shouldn't make
enough difference to warrant
these

You'll definitely benefit from lowering the front
derailleur, but even so, your shifting won't be as good as
it was originally. Your Shimano Ultegra derailleur was
designed to work with the radius of a 52t chainring, so the
tail end of it will be sitting further above the chainring
than is optimal. Where this is likely to show up most is in
shifting off the middle chainring onto the smallest one.
Fortunately, you're sticking with the normal 10-tooth
difference between the two larger chainrings; increasing
that difference has a more dramatic effect on reducing
performance.
As for removing chain links, that depends upon how things
are presently set up. Often people have chains a bit shorter
than they should be, in which case things might be perfect
with the reduced demands of a smaller large chainring. But
if things are basically correct with the stock
configuration, you should benefit from removing a few links
(probably 4 half-links).
