  1. Hi all,
I am considering changing out my original equipped Ultegra triple's 52-42-30
    chainrings with TA's 48-38-24.

Will I need to take out chain links for this 4 tooth (outer ring) change?
Also, will I need to lower the front derailleur?
I'm thinking that 4 teeth shouldn't make enough difference to warrant these
    changes..
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Harry

huh. that's exactly what i did.

i did. you may as well, it'll make a few more of the small/small gears
usable by reducing the amount of chain the derailleur has to take up.

maybe a tad, but in fact i had to leave the f/d visibly high to shift well.

why not? it's less hassle than what you're already doing.

The shift in gear-inches will be:

    7.7% in the big ring

    9.5% in the middle ring

    20% in the little ring

    Sound significant to me.

You'll definitely benefit from lowering the front derailleur, but even so,
your shifting won't be as good as it was originally. Your Shimano Ultegra
derailleur was designed to work with the radius of a 52t chainring, so the
tail end of it will be sitting further above the chainring than is optimal.
Where this is likely to show up most is in shifting off the middle chainring
onto the smallest one. Fortunately, you're sticking with the normal
10-tooth difference between the two larger chainrings; increasing that
difference has a more dramatic effect on reducing performance.

As for removing chain links, that depends upon how things are presently set
up. Often people have chains a bit shorter than they should be, in which
case things might be perfect with the reduced demands of a smaller large
chainring. But if things are basically correct with the stock
configuration, you should benefit from removing a few links (probably 4
    half-links).

I've also had that idea for quite some time. I'd like to hear a bit
more about your setup; could you provide some details about your
components? Do you find shifting to be less smooth than before?

Last season I changed my Ultegra triple to a TAs 50-40-28 and I am very
satisfied. Shifting is not quite as smooth as with the Ultegra, but only
barely noticeably so and is still quite satisfactory.

I am happy I made the change and would do so again.

    Mish

yea, it's definitely less quick/smooth than before especially between the 24
and 38 (i put on a chain catcher, i'd highly recommend that). that said,
it's not that bad, it's definitely acceptable and i'd certainly do it again.
hell, i rode it like this for about 9,000 miles. the drive-train was mostly
2002 shimano ultegra (the only exceptions were a respaced xt hub and an sram
chain) with a 11-32 or 12-27 cassette. the former esp left a few gears on
the small/small combo you couldn't use (you're exceeding the capacity of the
    r/d) but no big deal.

i'd blame the difference on the front derailleur being shaped for the 42/52
combo .. when my ultegra brifter broke i upgraded the brifters and r/d to
9sp campag (i didn't find the shifting w/ the hybrid setup to be all that
good, so i built up a campag wheel). sooo... with the campag brifters i
could probably find a f/d built for smaller rings and get great shifting
out of it. but i don't believe that's an option for the shimano brifters.
