At a minimum you will need shifters, front and rear dérailleurs, new crank and bottom bracket.

I think Ultegra, front shifter does have 3 clicks, so you do not need to change the shifter.

You will need new triple cranks, new front and rear derailleurs, a new triple bottom bracket, and a new chain if yours is not new.

I have double and triple, and I do not use ever the smaller chainring.

I would consider instead getting a new cassette 12-27 (ultegra and works with the small cage derailleur you have ) and if you need to have smaller chainrings then you can get the ultegra 52/39 or even get a smaller combination like 48/39 from other vendors like TA (just the chain ring).

Ultegra 9 speed shifters shift a double or triple. Rear derailer is always an option.

Crankset and 118.5 spindle BB, probably front derailer.RD is optional. Stay out of the small cogs when in the granny and the short cage works just fine.

If he is using his chain (as he stated) might be a little short when instaling the long cage derraileur and/or the bigger cassette.
