Front deraillers are pretty dumb, they only do what the shifter tells them to do. Should be OK,

Why would the FD have anything to do with the cassette?? 😕

Forgive my ignorance if this is entirely untrue, but...
...isn't a 10 speed chain more narrow than a 9 speed to more easily accomodate the extra cassette cog? And hence the cage of a 10 speed front derailleur would be more narrow as well?

You are correct, but an 8 speed front derailleur would work too as long as it's adjusted correctly. -
Well I rode the trainer for 75 minutes last night and didn't miss one shift w/ the 9-speed front derailleur. So I guess it is fine.
