No question, he did a fine job on that bike the way it was set-up. One
just wonders if he could have done better with a well prepared bike. I
would enjoy seeing Ullrich giving Armstrong some very close competition.
It of course still could be in the future of this race. I really wonder
about the wisdom of aero bars, bladed wheel, plus 177 cranks. I'm 6 foot
and when I get over 172mm things start feeling strange. I tried 175's and
had to go back to 172's as the longer crank arm really affected my
performance. Guess it must be OK for him or he would not have chosen it.

Back during the Tour de Georgia, I was standing in the steepest hairpin on
the upper part of the nasty climb in the TT, and noticed that some of the
guys going the quickest through that section were on their aerobars - even
on the 12-15% grade, in their lowest gear. Lots of extra leverage to be had
that way; I was surprised more didn't do it today.

It must have more to do with than just your height. Your thigh-bone length
and some other variables go into it, too, as well as personal preference.
I'm 6' exactly (32" inseam), and I'm very happy using 175's now, they feel
perfect to me as a matter of fact. I can climb much better than when I used
170's or 172.5's. I just switched this season, and I'm sorry I didn't try
it a few years ago.

Of course, I am not a pro racer, so I don't put in the kind of miles they do
nor do I do climb anywhere near as much nor as fast as they do, obviously.

Well Jason, ya just gotta learn to read before you spout off. I never once
said he did anything wrong .
It obviously must have worked for him. I only had a question about what if
he had used a set-up similar to Lances. Hell, he might have beat him.

I have great respect for Jan. I am not a Pro Bike racer but have won at
Ironman triathlon stuff. nothing at all compared to the tour. These guys,
right down to the last into Paris are to be admired.

No attack on you or Jan intended. Enjoy the rest of the tour. i will.

Why? As long as the bike was down to the UCI weight limit (although I'm not
certain Ullrich's was), then I'd opt for every aero advantage I could.

Prediction: Ullrich will win the final ITT, in part because he just
demonstrated how comfortable he is with his aero position.
