He seems like a truly nice kid. Lance had to learn how to be a sportsman. Ullrich has been like that ever since he arrived on the pro scene.

Ullrich has done some learning and growing up recently as well. If I were writing up a description of a "nice kid" it wouldn't include drunk driving and drug use.
Cancer forced Lance to grow up, and Ullrich's problems might have done the same.

Ulrich had to wait for Lance. How many times has Lance waited for Ulrich? Once earlier today in the stage and in '91 mountain stage. How would it of looked if Ulrich did not wait? Like he was not strong enough to beat him fairly. Lance is a great sport, has been for years. Now it is Ulrich's turn to mature and then he might win...

Saying he is a "nice kid" is vague. I am not saying he is a "goodie two shoes" but rather that he is respectful towards his competitors and fans.

Doing ecstacy and drunk driving are not an indication of niceness or lack thereof. Jan Ullrich was a nice guy before, during, and after those incidents.

I think so. He's grown up, for sure, and had a year away from the race scene. Ullrich has always been classy in the sense that he never brags or boasts about how great he is or whines about how he's been screwed. He's actually very humble. As for his drinking, hey, which one of us hasn't screwed up or done something stupid? I doubt we're all teetotalers and puritans here. It's not like the guy beat his wife or had a hit man kill his girlfriend. He seems to have made up for it.

It seems to me, that his escapades (and coming back from it, of course) gave him a real popularity gain in Germany.

I don't know about "making up" for anything. He seems to have figured out that the wins are not going to just drop in his lap like they did when he was younger. I think he has incredible talent. It seems that all he had to do to challenge Armstrong was show up without the extra weight he has habitually carried these last 5 years. That reminds me of what Paul said today about Ullrich weighing 35 pounds more than Lance! I doubt it! I would guess that he outweighs Lance by no more than 15 pounds or 20 at the absolute maximum.
Anyhow, I am super happy with the Tour this year. I love the way that the top guys are fighting every day. Nobody seems to be resting on his laurels, the top 3 on GC have each won a stage...this is a Tour like no other. In addition, there are plenty of promising riders for GC in the future and some spectacular climbers too. Things look really great for the cycling scene from where I sit.
