Yep, once you get to John O'Groats, jump on the ferry to the Orkney
Islands and spend a couple of days exploring the islands. And while

gear transported each day. We have all day to reach camp, so can
deviate from the route as long as we make camp that night.

I did it the other way - John O'Groats to Land's End - in about 1978. Was
told it was all down hill doing it that way. They lied! The hills of North
Devon were evil - some 1:4 AND with panniers fully loaded!

Some of the best bits, riding alongside the length of Loch Ness (which I see
you are doing), only monster I saw was myself in the mirror, and through
Glencoe between the mountains, and past Ben Nevis, >fast forward > riding
down through the mystical Wye Valley and over Severn Bridge, most of Devon
and Cornwall especially the last part through Tintagel to Land's End. As a
saying goes, when you finally arrive, "Oh what a feeling!".

1000ml (1600km) in 14 days. Bloody good training for bike racing!

Have a GREAT trip and savour every pedal stroke. It'll be a trip you never
forget.

but solo camping,.

I'm going a longer route, around 2000km and going up Snowdon, Skafell Pike
and Ben Nevis on the way and then the shetlands over 4-5 weeks.

I doubt I'll catch you up. . . . have a good one, the weather there is
warming up I hear. . .

When they say we have "all day" I don't think they mean *all day*... I'm sure there is time for a nana nap built in there somewhere??

I hope the weather is warming up... I guess the lows aren't as low at night, that has to count for something in the tent 🙂

From what I've been told, we'll get the worst of the hills out of the way in the first few days. (or have they lied about that ???)

We are thouroughly looking forward to it. I'm sure that the camera will be working overtime to capture the memories along the way.

1:3 apparently, but not overly high. I've been practising. . . up Mt
Wellington last weekend. . .

At least if riding you will be narrow enough that you can pass a vehicle on the climb/descent. The road is too narrow for two cars to pass for most of the steep bit, so when driving you need to plan ahead to give way. The countryside is wide open so no problem seeing the oncoming traffic.

I wouldn't suggest riding up those three :-)
Snowdon (local name Yr Wyddfa according to my diary) is too busy with tourists. We climbed from Pen-y-pass over Crib Goch and didn't join the main tourist trail until just below the summit. Believe me, you won't be riding a bicycle over Crib Goch. Was a bit of a shock to see all the people. Depending on your route up Skafell Pike you might be climbing a scree slope. I can't remember much of Ben Nevis apart from the rain which limited visibiliy to not very far at all.

While driving around the UK you get used to paying for parking, and turning up early enough to get a park at a tourist site. Bicycle should avoid that nicely.

I'm hiking up the hills (nearly called them mountains). . . Snowdon has a
train to the top and I believe there used to be a road up Ben Nevis. . .
weather can be a problem tho. . .
