most if the canal towpaths are totally unsuited to 'racing' [thank god], being predominately of a
rough surface. i've never had a problem on the Grand Union from Ricky up to London. it's a slow
ride, and sharing is the name of the game here...with walkers, other cyclists, fishermen and the
boat community. it's a slow environment down there...and interesting at times.

British Waterways demand a permit which I believe is free from them. I never had one when I used to
off road on toepaths and never got nicked, neither boatees or fishermen seemed to have a problem
with a cyclist either. Changing times I guess.

So the bilious reaction you expected didn't arrive !! Like I suggested, its the miserable minority
who are the grit in lifes vaseline. Sadly a good few of them post on the waterways group but then
these coffin dwellers are a tad on the arrogant side.

When I used to own an MTB I rode it on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal towpath and the the one passing
through Warrington (could possibly also be Leeds-Liverpool). Parts of the towpath are indeed narrow
and bumpy but parts are wide and could encourage fast riding. I used to enjoy the canals as I like
boats and industrial heritage.

I've had a pass since the days when you had to pay for them (err 1970's!) and have only been asked
to show it officialy twice (AFAIR), but it is useful to wave in the face of the akward squad!

Brit Waterways Board are a strange bunch.

They posted No Cycling signs on a stretch of towpath, at the same time part funding a study which
could have designated the same tow path as part of the National cycle network.

i don't suppose the £750,000 building fund and annual maintenance grants would have stirred their
interest in rolling out their 'access to all' policies????

Thankfully the route didn't go along waterways after much public protest

I had to rescue a narrowboat on the Leeds-Liverpool near Gatgrave one time. It was a pretty windy
day, and it had blown crossways across the canal up against a bridge, and the old couple on board
were completely failing to pull it straight again. I also notice a lot of boats with bikes on the
roof - I don't suppose a boater would be very chuffed at being told off for using it.
