  1. Just a thought which may or may not appeal:
Many of the regulars to this NG have their own mini websites, several
of which are not easy to locate as they are 'free' webspace provided
by ISP's, but tied into their addressing system. I am just such a
being. I would like to make my content more accessible to others, but
don't want to go to the expense of setting up my own unique site with
web-hosting costs, as frankly I don't have enough content to justify
    the expense.
For about £75, we could between us set up www.uk-rec-walking.com or
similar, with ample web space. Between 10 of us that would be £7.50
p.a., or if we got up to 75 users, a whole quid each. The beauty would
be that we would all have one focal point to browse each other's
sites, photos and TR's whilst maintaining ties with this NG.
I know it sounds a bit simplistic, but there must be people lurking
out there with the expertise to make it a reality.
I don't know if its already been suggested, or if there would be any
huge stumbling blocks which would make it a stupid suggestion. If that
is the case, please say so.
On the other hand, others may see merits and if no-one else wants to
do the setting up, I will gladly do so on a non-profit basis.

It doesn't have to be that expensive. A .org.uk domain name is £10 for 2
years from somewhere like FreeParking. Then find someone with an always-on
server and an ADSL connection to host it.

As to whether such a site would be worth it, I leave that to others.

Why not register your own domain name and have it point to your free space.
Cost £1.99 per year, pay two years in advance, total £3.98

The easy bit would be choosing a hosting company etc.
FWIW I currently use Host Logical
http://www.hostlogical.com/?a_aid=24&a_bid=8 for all my sites (I'm
greedy and run 3 of them!) and they're excellent value, the only
problem is their poor support, but it's improving and you do get a
    huge amount for your money.

Anyway, as I said, that's the easy bit. The hard bit is then (a)
finding someone to run it, and (b) deciding what to put on it.

What I had in mind was the homepage only being maintained by the
hoster with all other pages being the responsibility of the posters to
    upload and update.
Those posters would not be obliged to be hosted, they just have
pointers to their own independant sites.
By the lukewarm feedback so far, it looks like a non-starter.
Ah well, as I said, just a thought.

  7. It's already really been done - several of the regulars here are in it and
    I'm the 'ringmaster'.

    Take a look at:-

You would have to organize a vote or establish a consensus.

  11. Somebody like supanames could register a domain name and host it for about
    £13 a year I think.
You could allow others to mount pages and control by passwords etc.
    Good luck

A word of warning about this sort of service. As far as I can tell, the
basic cost of registering a .co.uk domain is around five pounds a year.
Some organizations insist that you pay two years in advance.

Some companies offer the service much cheaper but if you read the small
print it would seem that they own the domain and allow you to use it. When
the two years is up, the company can then charge you as much as they see
fit to allow you to renew it and this is how they make back their money.

uk.rec.audio have an index page with links to members pages:
    http://www.lurcher.org/ukra/
(*cough* What a bunch of geeks *cough* <G>😉

It would be nice to see something like that for URW. Perhaps it could also
encompass pages of regulars of related groups such as uk.rec.camping?

For my own site, I am currently using a service called 34sp
(http://www.34sp.com). For 15 pounds a year they give you 30 megs of space
(which TBH, isn't really all that much if you wanted to include digital
photos I suppose - that said, you can always dump static content and files
in some other space but reference it from your main site) and a 1gig per
    month download traffic limit.

The advantage that it has over most free ISP space is that it supports
server-side scripting (PHP etc) and an SQL database so you can use it to
build an interactive site with news bulletins, site search, forums,
galleries etc. You also get POP email box with web mail. Anyway, if you can
live with the limitations of their basic package or afford to upgrade, I
    can highly recommend the company.

I'm currently using a free content management system called Post Nuke in
the space to create a personal site. There's not very much on it yet but
    feel free to look around.

Frankly, I'm not sure that people who have sites are going to be willing to
give up their private sites to join the official one so, any system that
you set up is going to have an element of being a 'hub'.

I'm not really into the idea of using a full 'webring' service as I'm not
sure what benefits they have over a simple 'index page'.

It's a good idea, and I for one would like to see some sort of hub and
    central page for the group(s).

I have a three-page website for my rambling club - only £9 per year
with valuewebhosts, plus £10 per year for the alias from
snappydomains. I might as well plug it: www.midsurreyramblers.co.uk
