No fair; the Aztek is so ugly anything would look bad on it. Hell, it casts an aura of Ugly over
everything in a twenty foot radius.

If we're agreed it has to be an Aztec, how about putting on top... a Quetzal T-105? The aura of
ugly coming off that thing will set off car alarms.

Man, that's just ugly! That's ugly on ugly! Why that's ugly to the 10th degree! That's so ugly we
could probably use it for National Defense as an attack weapon of mass destruction! Whoops! Better
not give those Al-Q boys any ideas.

I think the idea here is just the opposite of modern car saftey design. A trike can't provide
crush zones like a car has, because there isn't enough room. However, it can be built so that
instead of being crumpled into a little ball when that SUV rear ends it, the trike can simply be
pushed along and out of the way. A roll cage and bumpers at the front, rear, and sides would take
the brunt of an impact without deforming, moving the entire trike as a unit with minimal damage
rather than having the delicate wheels, frame, and rider get demolished one by one.

There still might be too much rapid acceleration/deceleration injury to justify the extra weight.

However there might be something to be said for something that would take the impact at least at
bumper height or higher to keep the trike from going under the vehicle. Maybe something at an angle
so the trike would be lifted.

Traditionally cyclists and pedestrians often got thrown upward onto the hood, and I believe there is
a move in Europe to make this part of the car softer. All bets are off with SUV's. High SUV's are
    just a menace to everyone.

I'm sure there's something in the Geneva conventions about aggressive ugly use.

This sounds too much like a sport to be played with F350 pickups and a buncha drunk second

  5. John nice to see someone thinking rollbars/side and front crashbars on a trike (might) save a
life...but one should also be strapped in so as to not become a projectile in a crash.
PS....I'm back, my PC bought the farm last week.

  6. I believe the crash location for Nigel Mansel was in Arizona. Nigel barely survived and was a
nervous wreck afterwards. He calmed himself down by eating and became so fat he was slowing his cars
down in the few races he had left on his contract and then he retired (2 years too late IMHO).

As for how a trike would survive if it played chicken with a SUV? The trike would be toast, but the
pilot (could) survive with minimal blood loss (if) he/she is strapped in to a hardshell seat...which
is bolted to both the rollbar and the boom...airshocks allowed. The trick is to stay in the trike
and not be fired down the street. Most fender bender type accidents in the city happen with cars
going only 15-18 mph and hitting a trike at 18 mph should destroy the trike (if) it is properly
built re: designed to come unglued in a crash. No point in being scewered by trike tubes or have a
crank arm surgically removed from your forehead...let the trike fall apart all around you
(providing) your cockpit area is left intact with you strapped into it....hmm "let your trike fall
apart" conjures up some pretty funny thoughts re: someone slams a car door 50 feet away and all
around you your trike falls to pieces.

Re: Nigel Mansell drove his car into a wall at 200+ mph and survived
it....people would line up to buy the front bumper of any car that allows you to live after
smaking a wall at 200+ mph. I want a trike that can play chicken with a SUV and not have
the trike pilot on life support because the SUV won.

I am not familiar with that particular crash, but in general the secret to crash survival is
energy absorbtion. Race cars often glance off walls and such and continue to move, all the while
    dissipating energy.

With conventional cars, the bumper is just the starting point. The front and rear of the car are
designed to colapse while the passenger compartment stays in tact (as much as possible). The
front and rear of the car are sacrificed to absorb energy in a crash.

If you design a trike with a lot of heavy tubes to protect it, the trike might survive, but
because the structure is not energy absorbing, the rider won't be protected.

I think the idea here is just the opposite of modern car saftey design. A trike can't provide
crush zones like a car has, because there isn't enough room. However, it can be built so that
instead of being crumpled into a little ball when that SUV rear ends it, the trike can simply be

the brunt of an impact without deforming, moving the entire trike as a unit with minimal damage
rather than having the delicate wheels, frame, and rider get demolished one by one.

It's not a perfect solution, but every little bit helps.

Big Fat Nige did have a huge accident testing in Phoenix in early 1993, but recovered to win four
further races and the CART championship that year...

  8. Yeah, but didn't he retire from racing a year later? I saw an interview with Nigel and when the
interview mentioned the Arizona crash Nigel "lost it" and said something about how he plans to get
as far away from cars and work at a K-Mart store in Florida. My wife used to work for CART, her job
was supplying the Pit Crews and drivers with Alcohol (I never quite figured that one out) till I saw
a member of one pit crew accidentally set himself on fire during a refueling and his crew mate
rushing to assist him was hit by a car. I find it more entertaining to watch the pit crews than the
race itself. "Dave Larrington" <[email hidden]> wrote in message

He had a second and somewhat lacklustre season in CART in 1994, though he might have won the 500 had
not some feckless berk parked on top of him as he came into the pits, and also ran 4 F1 races for
Williams following the death of Ayrton Senna. He won the end-of-season Australian GP after Messrs.
Hill and Schumacher had contrived to leve the race prematurely, and is widely credited with getting
the Williams management to notice that, yes, the FW16 was a dog.

In 1995 he went to McLaren, sat out the early season races while a car big enough to accommodate him
was built, drove two races and then cleared off to the gold course.

He may have retired from CART but he didn't retire from racing, I saw him a few years ago doing
rally type racing although I don't know if he does it today
