I'm no fan of Alberto Gonzales, but my interest in the story isn't
partisan. I presume a similar story might be written with a Democrat as
the AG. What impressed me was the ungodly amount of preparation considered
necessary so this guy can take a spin on his bike. A convoy of armored
vehicles transports him and his equipment to the ride site; FBI agents
accompany him fore and aft carrying weapons and medical equipment; an FBI

The punch line, as far as I was concerned, comes when you learn at the end
of the story that this preparation was for 13 miles on a suburban bike
path. I'm not criticizing the distance. All cycling is good and the AG is
a newbie. But 13 miles seems like the kind of distance people ride because
the casserole's in the oven and there's time to kill before dinner. I
wonder how much I would ride if I felt I needed to mobilize the full
resources of the federal government any time I wanted a little fresh air.

Unfortunately what can one do? The AG is a marked man and many many
criminals, crazy people, and terrorists want to kidnap and hold him hostage
or kill him.
But he has no life either, not with appointments, schedules and such, 13
miles was probably all he could do in the amount of time he had available.
The President gets a even bigger entourage whenever he gets to ride a bike
as well.

I dunno. A friend of mine I work with and I are planning a trail
race, and we have been teasing each other frequently This inspires us
to train harder.
But my wife says she is following along with a video camera and a

along the trails for me. The vidcam is for when I collapse, the

It is a sad commentary on how paranoid government officials are that he
even thinks he needs such an escort. I sure could care less about him
and I doubt that even the would be terrorists have him on their mind.
Too low an office for really big news, not that low, but not that high a
profile either.

Yeah, it's not the 300 million who couldn't care less about him (or
despise him but would not resort to the use of violence) who are the
problem, it's the couple of dozen loons that they get paranoid about,
particularly since the Reagan shooting. Prior to that, there were

I voted for Carter, twice, nice guy. I have seen many clips of him
hammering away, just not of his guards, but that would be a good on the
job workout for them, so it is a good thing, right?

Ooooh, yeah. ISTR that the White House gym was upgraded significantly
during Ronnie's term specifically so that the Pres could get a workout
without having to tie up half of the Mall with security. Clinton
going for a run was probably more for PR than anything else, though I
have to say that if I was nutcase enough to take that job, I'd
probably still want to be able to sneak out and get some real fresh
air once in a while.

The USA is a very populous country, Dennis, so saying a lot of
Americans think that he's "a very dangerous Fascist" really doesn't
mean much. 500,000 people is a "lot" of people and that's a low
estimate of the number of Americans that believe the AIDS virus was
manufactured in a CIA laboratory and then intentionally spread through
black communities in an underground war of genocide. At least that same
number of Americans believe that Elvis is alive and in hiding, that OJ
was innocent, that Bill Maher is actually funny, that Rush Limbaugh is
not an entertainer, and that Pat Robertson is just spreading the word
