Hello, From memory I think you would be restricted to 23mm with mudguards.

Nah! I have a (531C-framed) dawes audax. It has 700x25C's on at the
moment (with guards). I'd estimate as long as the guards aren't wonky
or anything, you might get 28's under there, but I've never tried it.
It *looks* like there's space. Have no idea bout 32's.

Mine certainly does 🙂
The best reference I've found for tyre sizing is Sheldon Brown's page on
the subject: <URL: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html>.
Specifically the green and red table near the bottom.

I've got a '98 Dawes Audax.
Have always used 700x28 and SKS mudguards.
Have had many different (slick types mainly) brands and find there's bags of
space.
Have never tried anything bigger but you could try one, your LBS would
probably swap it for a 28 if nec.
Halfords certainly would. (or borrow one to try).
Paul.

Had a look at my brother-in-law's Dawes Audax on Saturday - currently shod
with Schwalbe 25mm tyres. There looks reasobable clearance for 28mm - 32 may
be pushing it a bit for mudguard clearence although frame clearance looks
fine. The simplest solution is to find a freindly LBS who will let you try
the tyres and buy the ones that fit, you will pay a little more than mail
order but only the once!
