100lb - that sounds a lot!!
If you're running 18mm tyres, 100-120psi is probably about right, but check the max pressure rating
marked on your sidewalls. Some go up to 145psi.

in at all?
On 18mm, so hard you _cannot_ press your finger in at all. There's not much of an 18mm tyre between
the road and the rim, and it has to be hard enough to protect the rim if you hit a pothole at 40mph.
If that's too hard for you to ride on comfortably, go for a 23mm or 28mm tyre.
Quoted message said:Ot hard but you can just about press the tire a fraction? When I sit on my bike I would say the
back tire crushes perhaps a quater of its diameter on the bottom. This sound right?
No, way too much. On an 18mm tyre the amount of squash should be barely perceptible.

very difficult to get any more pressure into the tires with my portable Blackburn £20 pump. Is
there an adapter for use with a car pump so that I can use the Blackburn only in the event of a
puncture when out on the road?
Car pumps aren't designed for these pressures, and garage airlines can't safely deliver air in small
enough amounts; you need a track pump (although you ought to be able to achieve sufficient pressure
reasonably easily with a full size frame pump).
18mm tyres are extremely narrow specialist racing jobs, and need to be treated as such. If you're
not racing and you find running at that pressure to sore on the bum, get a wider tyre.
