  3. You need to be careful with fruit because it is high in carbs. Five helpings is a lot. A serving
(helping) would be 1/2 a small banana, an apple about the size of a tennis ball, 10 grapes, a small
orange, 1/8 cantalope. The portion sizes for fruit are a lot smaller than what most people think.
You also have to be careful because many fruits can send your glucose skyrocketing. I can't eat
bananas, grapes, or oranges. I can do apples, melons, and berries. Your best bet is to test two
hours after a meal in which you eat a serving of fruit. If you glucose is above 140 you probably
shouldn't eat that fruit. Most of us either don't eat it or consume it in very limited amounts. At
most, I do two servings, of the fruits I CAN eat, a day.

Stay away from fruit juices. That's like eating several pieces of fruit at once. As always, YMMV. c

I am also type II and I have been adviced to not eat fruit more often than every four hours. (I.e.
mid morning snack and afternoon snack is ok). I have a hard time seeing how you could fit five fruit
meals in with that rule. How ever this is only the advice have been given and may not apply to
    anyone else.

One portion (or helping) of fruit is one fruit or 2 dl of berries. Bananas is better if they are on
    the green side.

A protion of fruit shouldn´t really be combined with a full portion of milkproducts either. The
fructos and the lactos is normally too much in combination.

  7. Where did you get that number?

There is a campaign in the US that we should eat at least 5 servings of fruits OR
    vegetables a day...

Veggies are lower in carbs. Lean on them.

Probably not! And they are called "servings", not helpings. I'm not even sure what a helping is. I
think that is a term that is used in various parts of the country. A serving of fruit depends on
what kind of fruit it is. 1 cup of strawberries, 4" of banana, 10 grapes, small apple, orange, pear,
    1/2 cup cooked, unsweetened fruit.

Some people find that fruit spikes them. I personally don't like fruit and I don't eat it for that
reason. What they said with the food pyramid was to eat 5 fruits or vegetables per day. Not 5 fruits
and 5 vegetables. But a total of five.

Have you seen a dietician? If not, you should.

I have one put out by the ADA. It is outdated now. Not sure if they have a newer version. That's the
best one I've found so far, but I've also found a lot of bad ones!

    Howdy Jim,

I would say this, if you are able to eat 5 servings of fruit a day, and STILL keep your blood
glucose levels in a range that you find good for you, I would say, this. Test with the fruits you
want to be eating, and see what happens with YOUR body.

    Quoted message said:

    What is a helping?

Well a helping is pretty much whatever you plop in front of you. A serving, would be a lot smaller
in most cases. A 1/2 cup to a cup of most fruits, would relaly be a serving (roughly). Now, to make
things tougher, you might very well find out that for YOU, a serving of any fruits is going to be
MUCH less than a 1/2 a cup. The only way yuou are going to find out is to eat fruit A to fruit Z,
and test your bg levels to see how they effect them. You have to remember fruit contains natural
sugar, sugars are carbs, carbs raise your bg glucose levels.

You might find that for YOU, apple and oranges are not something you can eat much of if at all. So
they would not be on your list of things you would eat for those servings of fruit. You might have
luck with berries. But again you will have to do the testing and checking of the different fruits
    that you can find locally.

A really good basic book, is Diabetes for Dummies. Basic in the fact that it explains things in a
manner that allows you to see just what goes on with diabetes, and will also give you a better
understanding of what some of the meds are for, what tests results mean, and what type of things you
may want to ask your doctor about.

I'd check otu a few books in your local library first. That way you can see which books fit your
needs for right now, and then buy them later for refernces.

I was about to say the same thing! It's five portions of fruit or veg a day. Not seen any
stipulation about proportions so it could just as easily be five of veg.

As ever YMMV and use that meter!

A "helping" in many of the non-US English speaking parts of the world is just another name for
    a serving.

For those without servants, it's what appears on your plate when you have "helped yourself"
    to a serve.

Sort of like trunk-> boot, perpetrator->villain, "curly thing to join things together"->screw etc.
(or, if you like, screw->bonk among many, many, many other alternatives. Seems to be a popular
    derivative.)

    tomayto, tomarto etc
