  1. It could be interesting. 50.062 kph in the Olympic TT could get him close to
B'man's record if he rides a fast track like Manchester. Go Tyler!

  2. Two words: NEVER HAPPEN.

Tyler is not as strong or as aero as Chris Boardman. Like apples and
    oranges.

  3. Riding the Hein Verbruggen Retro Speciale Bicycle, I don't think he'd be any
less aero than B'man when he went just a bit further than Merckx. It
probably won't happen, but it would be nice if it did.
Maybe Barney will get Bobby J. to give it a try. The guy is a miracle worker
    (apologies to Helen Keller). ;-)

Wouldn't it be cool if the Tour adopted "cannibal" rules for one of the
long time trials? Would Lance not show up?

Yes, but he seems to time trial faster than guys who are as strong
    and/or as aero as Boardman.

That's why they don't just take your SRM data, wind tunnel drag data,
and VO2max scores and declare a winner. You actually have to race to
    see who wins.

Having said that, I don't think Tyler can ride the track well enough
to set a new record. In fact, if there's anyone who could crash
themselves while riding the 'drome by themselves, it's probably Tyler

Indurain had no track background, and he did it. I don't believe
Rominger had any background on the track either. Riding the white
    line is not that hard.

Maybe that's his problem. His background is in skiing, maybe he
    has problems with level surfaces.

Ah, I remember that Boardman wasn't overly-skilled on the road either
and he did okay during his hour attempts.

That is a very cool idea!

Then the guys would just use "virtual" aero bars, ie., riding with their
forearms resting on the flat, horizontal part of the handlebar.

That's ok. But I'm not certain that they would be able to generate enough
power that way to win a long tt. I think they'd need the leverage of a grip
    on the bars.

    It can be done.

  14. Maybe. He does have that smaller body that creates less resistance through
    those velodrome corners.

As I recall, Boardman had been riding track for many years before he
went serious road racing on the continent. His problem (regarding his
frequent crashes) seemed to be that he was sort of scared to be in the
peloton. He always semed to be in a goofy place in the bunch. I don't think
he did much straight road racing in the UK, and I don't think the peloton
in the UK is anything like it is in Europe. Obviously, that doesn't apply
to his prologue crash. Boardman had good bike handling skills (in general)
but seemed to lack in pack handling skills.

Do cyclists never ride with their shirts off [in training]? These "farmer
    tans" suck.

  17. Speaking of Rominger consider this:

    Stage 19, 1993 Tour, 48k tt::

    1. Rominger 57:02 (50.495 kmh)

    2004 Olympic tt, 48k:

    1. Hamilton 57.31.74 (50.062 km/h)

I was fly-fishing on a lost river near Mackay, Idaho, July 25th 2004,
stoned, when the idea came to me.

OK the distqance is the same but what about the conditions:

    - heat
    - wind
    - rolling terrain
    - opponents
