    Two Bikers Killed in Crash With Sheriff's Deputy

    CUPERTINO, Calif. (KCBS) -- Two bicyclists were killed, and another
    suffered major injuries after being hit by a Santa Clara Sheriff's
    patrol car in Cupertino Sunday morning.
    The Sheriff's Department says the deputy was patrolling on Stevens
    Creek Road near Montobello road around 10:30 this morning, when his
    car crossed over the centerline and hit the cyclists.

    One of the cyclists died at the scene, while a second died at Stanford
    Medical Center. The third is listed in critical condition at Stanford.

    "We just lost a couple of phenomenal human beings. The fact that they
    were tremendous athletes is really beyond the point as well, although
    they both were. Christy was on her way to the Olympic trials, and Matt
    was a phenomenal rider. It's very distressing," said Gebhart Evanhook,
    who was riding just behind the two cyclists who died.

    The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave while the CHP
    investigates the accident.

    Witnesses say there is speculation that the deputy may have fallen
    asleep at the wheel. He was not responding to a call, or speeding at
    the time of the crash.

    Yes they were both racers. Kristy just started racing this year and
    participated in our Early Bird training series for new racers. She won
    every road race she enterd and had just been upgraded to Cat 2 a week
    before. Matt had been a Cat 4 for a couple of years and last weekend
    won the Cat 4 race at the MERCO crit, a race he had been training for
    for a year to win.

    to hear anything about that.

    According to a 4th rider, who was a little behind the group that was
    hit the deputy got out of his car mumbling about how he must have
    fallen asleep. From videos of the crash site the cop car crossed the
    double yellow lin, crossed the oncoming lanes of traffic crossed the
    bke lane and ended up on the hillside. No skid marks could be sceen in
    the video I saw.

    This is horrible, I know that area well, where did the accident happen
    exactly ?

    Dumbass -

    The bike upright with the front squashed under the front bumper wasn't
    pretty, especially since there wasn't a broken windshield.

    Actually, the entire driver's side windshield was destroyed. Moot
    point, however, since two cyclists are now dead.

    Though they had witnesses, I've heard of such things being suppressed
    or ruled not credible, because as a cyclist the witness would be
    'biased'.

    One of the people who quoted the deputy was a chiropractor who had been driving on
    the road and arrived just after the accident, so it'd be hard to toss his statement
    out [1]. What you described does happen sometimes, though not always.

    I was told that another cyclist was killed on Hwy 84 yesterday but I haven't found
    an article yet.

    Condolences for everyone involved in these incidents.

    I heard about this accident on 740AM KCBS at about two in the morning
    here in San Diego, conversely the San Fransisco Chronicle has a detailed
    report. What can one say, it pains me to read when fellow cyclists are
    killed be it a racer or a commuter. I pity the officer who was very
    candid in his explanation however if there is a lesson from this tragedy
    it would be the issue of getting enough sleep as a result of being
    overworked. Although it's no excuse for the officer to take two lives
    most certainly
    it should be considered by those who are professional drivers.
