Turbo Trainer gets very hot

  1. I would be grateful for any advice on this one. I've just bought a Minuora Hypermag 1200 t/trainer. I tried it to day for the first time and experienced a burning smell. I was told this was probably just oil inside the magnet casing buring off due to friction. After a quick 20 minute work the casing around the magnetwas too hot to touch. Is this normal? I need to know in case I have a defective unit.

    The unit will get hot. Remember, the unit is applying resistance against your produced power. The energy you generate to overcome that resistance is disspated as heat.

  3. More correctly. A rotating magnetic field is produced by the spinning rotor. This creates induced electric current in the casing. The current cannot of course increase infinetly and is counteracted by the resistance of the casing (at high enough current even conductive metals have a decent amount of resistance). How does a resistor dissipate energy? It heats up. You have just experienced eddy currents in a real world application.

    So the resitance you actualy feel is electrical resistance. Cool eh?

    The roller gets hot on my turbo aswell, the burning smell is the rubber on the tyre.

    The tread has completely worn away on the centre. Is this normal?

    You do not have enough contact pressure between the tire and the trainer roller. You should adjust the tension such that if you take the rim with your hand and jerk it either forward or backward, there is no slippage. If not, there will be slippage, and you will quickly wear out your tyres.
