I've got the day off tomorrow to catch the TT and I'm wondering if others are going down to watch and if so, where. I thought I would head to Black Rock as I rather suspect there will be a large Kathy Watt support group there!

I hope BV isn't running the "timing"... no chance of them getting any membership money from me in the next while....

Also thinking of heading down for a look, unable to go to the road race on Sunday, so this is the consolation prize. Not sure where will be the best vantage point, I am sure black rock will have a good crowd

Yep, I'm still desperately looking each day for some evidence that they have results. $10 wasted? I hope not. 🙁LOL, I'm picturing a whole lot of athletes including Kathy hitting the refresh button in vain hope of finding out what times they posted and the medals being presented some time next month.

Yeah I've taken the day off to watch it. I'll probably try and get as close as I can to the Start/Finish in St Kilda, at least for the ladies race, then head down to Cafe Racer later.

Somewhat counter-intuitavely, timing for an ITT is very hard to get
right. If everyone started on time it'd be easy ... -

If I gave more of a s*it I'd be screaming for my $10 back...

It was chaos at the startline as a lot of people had missed their start times, however, it is a little hard to be on time when you don't know until you get there what your start time is. It was only luck that Euan and I woke up early and got there in time for my start because I assumed (wrongly) that I could turn up whenever and I would just be sent off. I am certain that a few lessons have been learnt by BV and indeed, me, and hopefully there will be another opportunity to do the ITT. I would certainly do it again but there may be others who wont bother next time due to what has happened this time.

Personally I think the wording on the website was to blame for this. It implied you could start any time you wanted, rather than having a set time.

Organiser's nightmare. ITTs are just about impossible when start times
are all over the place. It shouldn't be if they've got the right equipment, which can be as simple
as a couple of stopwatches, paper and a pen. I used to time canoe slaloms
and we had a rather fancy centralised timing unit (loaned out by the
national canoeing body) that allowed for more or less random starts and
stops triggered by people at different locations. We usually had a backup
of just a stopwatch at the start and finish (using the "lap time" button)
which was more than adequate, just subtract the start time from the finish
time and you've got the total time.Graeme

it.However MTBO and regular orienteering events are nearly always a time trial
format start. Riders even choose their own start times on the day, front up
ahead of time (if you're late, your bad luck) and then complete the course
to get an individual finish time. Two synchronised clocks are used. Time
details are all on the one card, simple calculation to get the time. Very
rare for there to be any confusion about your time. Maybe confusion over the
controls you've got , but not over time.It seems pretty straight forward. What extra things complicate it for an
ITT?--

Thats allright. No coffee shop there. You will have to settle for non
cyclistsTim, we will probably ride up torronga and down Hawthorn south and
bluff or something to get to black rock cos beach rd wont be a goer.
Maybe we should rondevous either here or on the way?Dave

ITT?Riders starting out of order, riders arriving at the finish at the same
time as eachother (sometimes in groups of 4 or more, not drafting, of
course ...). Lack of manpower to record start and finish times as well
as hold riders, count them in, marshall them etc.All these things are solvable, but require more people than you'd
expect. Using RFID would be great (I'm a little bit involved in the
current Mike Clarke/David Braendler system, so know a bit about it),
but it's not quite ready yet. -

Maybe a bit beyond them. But probably unecessary given the start was within a few metres of the finish.Maybe the clocks should be given to the cyclists to carry with them over the course to ensure we record their time, rather than our perception of it.
