am I right to assume that if it's omitted and it's a double it's 54/39?
It's 50/34 then or I really have to count for each poorly speced bike?
I like my Allez triple, 54/39 is way too tall for me,
If its a triple as you state, count if it has three chainrings in
front, then you have another smaller chainring to use if the big two
rings are too tall for you. That is why the inner ring is on the
bike.
54/39 outer rings on a triple? You might have the only one ever put
on a bike. If I had to guess, I'd say its 53 for the outer ring. But
count to be sure.

50/34 is roughly one gear lower than 53/39. You can achieve the same
high and low gears on a 53/39 as a 50/34 by switching to the next
larger cassette. 13-26 instead of 12-23. 12-25 instead of 11-23.
Lots cheaper and easier to change cassettes. But its not fashionable
so you should buy a new compact crankset and be cool.

Do a Google search and read the many, many, many threads. The only
sort of real advantage of a compact double over a triple is you cannot
accidentally shift to the inner chainring when going from the big ring
to the next smaller ring. With Ergo this almost never happens.
Probably far more likely with STI.
