many of them are in the lot?" ;-)

An apparently it's a RACING bike! Ha! You wouldn't just be laughed out
of the bunch with a bike like that, you'd be spat out! Clipping in looks

Now now, I reckon it'd be a good club racing bike for the likes of
Lance Armstrong - you'd probably have to make him carry some ballast
as well, though. ;-)

Having a look at image #6, I really do suspect that it has a screw-on
freewheel. Especially likely given the steel triple chainring,
plastic platform pedals and claw-mounted rear derailleur. Those
brakes look pretty nasty, too.

Incidentally, why do roadies have such a loathing for triple front
chainrings? Is it just a machismo thing, or does it have some logical
basis?

Does suck to drop a chain though, especially in the middle of a bunch.
Pity deda fangs (or the like) don't come standard on the kind of bikes
that have triples. I had to jury rig mine on, because it was too
small for the seat tube, despite it being the largest one available.
Haven't dropped a chain since.

Harder to set up precisely and reliably too - mis-shifts are very
common on triples.

And finally, triples always seem to be on 8 speed bikes. Why not just
go 10 speed with a double?

I have several roadie friends with triples. Mind you, the people I know
that have them don't really need them. For most roadies its unneeded
gearing. I know others with compact cranks to sort out the low end. It's
all personal preference. In a race situation you'd only ever use the
triple during disastrously steep hill-climbing scenarios (we have quite
a few in CBR)and even then there'd be someone grinding out in a bigger
gear and sailing past you up the hill while you spin.

I have a loathing for triple front chainrings, but I throw away the large
one, not the small one. See, for example,

As for roadies not liking/using triple rings, in a road race you either keep
up with the bunch or you might as well not be there, and you certainly won't
manage it if you drop down to the granny ring. Plus having the 3rd chainring
there buggers up the chainline for the two large rings.

My touring bike and my mountain bike have triples, but it is so much
nicer and smoother to change the double on my racing bike that I'd be
very reluctant to give that up. One day soon I'll move to a compact, but
if it gets too steep for that then that's just too bad!

Yeah, it's quite laughable. I bought my 2005 Giant TCR2 with full 9spd
105 (hence a price reduction) for $1399. I race with it and it's a very
good bike IMO. The one these guys are selling is a worthless piece of
[censored] and they want THAT much for it! Sheesh!
