Just hope and pray that you and the other dolt that is slamming Pantani for depression don't
experience mental illness of have a close relation or friend with it..

untreated) commit suicide.

The death rate for mental illness is higher in some areas than cancer or heart disease.

I truly hope they make a decent effort of the Obree movie - they say they're filming this summer,
but it's been stop-start for a while. You couln't make up the real-life story.

It was particularly strange for those of us who witnessed this bizarre character who used to beat
us in local TT's suddenly being better than Merckx and Moser.

How close is genius and the problems Graeme is now experiencing? I wish him him well.

I admire Graeme for talking about bipolar disease. Alarming numbers of bipolars succeed with suicide
It cannot be cured simply with medication. The medication of choice doesn't work if you have be
first treated for depression. ECT (electro-convulsive therapy) is a last, desperate and tempory
relief for some. I am not in the medical profession but I have seen bipolars and their families who
live on eggshells for years. My heart goes out to Graeme.

I also know personally that even when he was at the height of his accomplishments, he took time to
encourage young cyclists to attain their goals.

That's obvious, lithium carbonate is used to treat both the highs and lows of bipolar
(manic-depressive) disorder.

Psychiatric treatment includes both the aforementioned "cures". A bipolar friend has suffered for
years with such a disorder and is currently on Lithium after ECT during psychiatric ward spells
and various drug cocktails. After the first ECT treatment he said he'd never have it again but
after coming off medication and spiralling rapidly he took that course again. The lithium,in the
case of this person provides some stability though I haven't heard of him in a year or so. The ECT
he described as having a "decoding" or scrambling effect on the brain,the theory being something
like,the re-coding sorting through the 'problems'.Something like a PC defrag,dare I say it. But
putting everything back in order. I'd say his parents,lovely people,are very,very concerned about
his well being but are pretty trusting,despite a couple of suicide attempts. I shared a house with
the guy I am referring to and saw first hand how difficult these conditions are.

Re-Obree,I had no idea of his condition and am somewhat shocked.
