As you can probably tell by the title...I'm new to cycling. I just got my bike two weeks ago. It doesn't fit in my car, but I think it might if the front wheel came off.
I put the quick release lever to the open position and loosen the clamp on the other side. I then put the release lever on the front brakes into the open position. This only widens the breaks by a very minscule amount. The tire is wider that the space in between the brake pads and therefore will not come off.

What kind of bike is this and what kind of tire and what kind of brakes? I'm sure it'll work if you deflate the tire, but there's probably a better way. You're not having trouble with the hub skewer/lawyer lips, just the brakes?

Good questions and common in new cyclists. Whoever sold you the bike should have given you a lesson. Otherwise, find an experienced cycling friend to show you. It is an easy thing once you see it.
Knobby tires sometimes have a bit of a problem clearing the brakes even when the brakes are opened up, sometimes a good whack to knock the tire does the trick. You said you used the lever to open the brakes, so I am assuming that we are talking about a road bike with calipers. Trying forcing the tire out, it usually doesn't hurt anything as it is just rubber to rubber contact. Though I am wondering why it is a miniscule amount as you said. The release lever on calipers usually opens them up enough to get most tires out without a problem or with a little shove. I would see about having your brakes adjusted and then a quick little lesson in quick releases.

How much clearance do you have when the brake release lever is closed? I know with the Shimano calipers I've had, the lever usually spreads the calipers a decent amount. I have worked on bikes where the release lever doesn't function properly (namely Cannondale brakes). Instead of spreading the caliper, all the lever does is bend the cable. I would have the bike shop take a look at it. Generally on a road bike, the clearance in the fork doesn't allow for too big of a tire (maybe 28mm on some bikes).
had the same problem with my road bike when i got it. the tyres just jammed when trying to remove the wheels. a quick thump and off it came. although replacing the tyres (700x25) with 700x23 solved the problem fulltime.
