Be careful with that. After the fall of the Soviet Union it was learned
that, for the most part, McCarthy was absolutely right. While his
    methods
may have been hard handed, the communists were trying to subvert

    America.

    really are a troll Chuck.

Yeah, it was amusing, after the fall of the Soviet Union, when the KGB
released all kinds of old records and files, and, lo and behold, there
WERE spies here. Ethel and Julius Rosenberg really did deserve to
    hang/fry/whatever.

Absolutely. But there is a world of difference between spying for an enemy
(e.g. Pollard) and flirting with foreign ideologies which threaten The
    American Way of Life.

That is true; however, I do not think that those folks were just "flirting"
with the communist ideology--obviously some of them were, and some of them
did not even understand who was pulling the strings. But a significant
portion were backed, in some way financed, and directed by agents of the
Soviet Union. They also were trying hide the fact that they were in touch
and in bed with Soviet agents. I think that makes it a wee bit different.
There are still many communist groups operating in the US. They have benign
names like Workers World Party, Progressive Labor Party, etc.--Workers World
Parry was one of the behind the scene organizers of a Cindy Sheehan rally a
    couple months ago in Washington
    http://www.laweekly.com/ink/02/50/news-corn.php).
They do not like to have the C word used, so they use alternative
names--gee, I wonder why?--these organizations are home grown (left over old
hard-core Left radicals from the 50 and 60's).
They are as wacko as they come, but they are also as American as they
come--freedom of speech and all that. If they were being directed, financed,
and run by a foreign power that would be WAY different.

Hmmm...Pollard spied for an enemy, huh? Tried to sneak that in?

Well, you know I'm no "friend of Israel." But consider where the information
    eventually wound up:

"Many officials said they were convinced that information Pollard sold to
the Israelis had ultimately wound up in the hands of the Soviet Union."

You're correct in the difference. But, most of what McCarthy was
warning about were real enemies. That he was a miserable douche bag
lead him to take it all a bit too far. It doesn't change the underlying
correctness of his warnings. Or his vindication by the KGB's records.

It appears that "McCarthyism" has been cartoonized and exploited so much
that the reality has been replaced by a myth. A balanced, nuanced
interpretation of events is too much of a PITA for the general public.

Well, he's dead, right? The innocent people he had blacklisted are all
dead or approaching death's door. Let's talk about the still living.

What's your balanced, nuanced interpretation of events here in MFW?

Any comment on making this newsgroup a better place? I don't recall
your being a part of the pack mentality on either side of the
imaginary line that seems to have been drawn. I see no Hatfield nor
McCoy hat on your head, so as an apparently impartial observer/patron
of this newsgroup, I'd be interested in your opinion.

Barring that, more weight and lower reps versus less weight and higher
    reps - what say ye?

    her?

Google way back to her posts.

She has an excellent website, (one of the best on the 'net), a good
history, is intelligent and sweet and was a very welcome poster.

    She is missed!

You tell me. I mean, ~*YOU*~ just mentioned her. HAW!

    Er, anyway.

She has a great sense of humor. And a fun writing style. She's cute
enough. Hell, she even has ears like mine (well, minus the big effing
holes, but those are aftermarket, so...)!

And her stumptuous.com Web site is hella informative and interesting,
of course. Ymmv, but I say she's special. Yeah, I'd even go far as to
describe her as *so* special for those reasons and, I'm sure, more.

    THANKS FOR ASKING!
