    Can anyone recommend a small tripod for my digital still camera, ideally with some strap type
    attachment suitable for securing the tripod/camera to a gate post for when weather conditions make
    using tripod unsuitable.

    Why not use a Lecki Walking pole which has a screw fitment on top. Get to use one item that has 2
    useful functions.

    I just use a small tripod from Jessops. Very flimsy but it does the job if you're careful and it
    weighs hardly anything so you can easily take it everywhere.

    Don't know about that, why not make a strap of your own? I find that a bean bag works best for windy
    weather, just plonk it on a rock or a wall or tree stump or whatever. I just filled a plastic bag
    with peas, then tied it up and put it inside a small stuff sac.

    If you keep the bag, it might come in useful to put on your next sprained ankle. ;-)

    Looks like it needs a flat surface. I've got a teeny one like that with bendy legs, good for
    uneven surfaces.
