The return spring in my Shimano Altus ST-CT90 gear changer has ceased to function. This means that although I get a clean change, the trigger does not return to firing position unless I pull it back. This prevents those rapid-fire up-changes encountered at the tops of hills. The chain ring changer went like this some time ago, but that hasn't really bothered me. I've taken it apart a bit, and the springs which hold the ratchet lever in the cogs are both ok, but I can't see a broken spring, or figure out where a return spring would have been attached. I'm assuming there's only one return spring, as the returnability of both change-up and change-down levers failed at the same time. Does anyone know a web-site with diagrams, or is this not a DIY repair? (I know someone's going to say "scrap it and get a better set", but just for now, let's take that as read, I ain't made of money.)

There are exploded view diagram pdf's on the Shimano website for lots of things (though maybe only current products for all I know) - search for the particular product and it will list them if available.
However I doubt if you will get any spare parts needed to repair the levers -- Chris French, Leeds

Are you sure it's not just the gear cable that's sticking?

PS OTOH, my own gear cable may well be OK and the problem on my bike is down to the shifter :-/

I've got the same exact problem with same exact shifter, it's basically a piece of sh!t. Did you ever find a solution or a replacement part? I noticed the shifter pod can come off, so I'm assuming that may possibly be replaced instead of the whole shifter/lever assembly. Let me know what worked for you.
