  1. Went for stroll this morning around the Brecon Visitor Centre and took in
the Trig point on Twyn y Gaer. As I approached I found a woman giving it a
lick of paint. Got chatting to her and she mentioned that some time ago she
had *adopted* the trig point to look after it. She lives in Cardiff but her
local trig was already taken and she spends a fair bit of time around the
Brecon area so chose this one - she says it is easy to get to as well!
Anyway, wondered if anyone has any details of where I might get the info for
this scheme - if its still running?- as I wouldn't mind doing something
similar for the trig up my local hill, Carn y Cefn.

    Cheers
    Alan

  2. I think you may have to check with the OS Office in Southampton as a
few of the trig points are still used and maintained by them.

They may also be able to give you details of who, if anyone , you
    should contact.

    Lindsay.

  3. I joined onto the scheme 1994, and I seem to recall it was mostly all done
    by '96.

As someone already said, you ought ask the OS, but in the meantime you
might get a faster answer from the trigonomy group on yahoo:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/trigonomy/

They certainly know where they all are, and wander round the country
collecting them .. whether they actually go so far as to tend them I'm
not sure, but they might know about it.

I wonder if these people would get them surveyed to a 10 figure (1m) OS
grid reference, or better? and put a little plaque on them giving this
info. Would be useful for GPS users.

I'm pretty sure this info is on the OS website (for trig points that
they still use at least). It's somewhere after

    http://www.gps.gov.uk/login.asp

I'd look for it, but I haven't got my password at work. It's probably
    'Passive Station Database'.

I am registered on http://www.gps.gov.uk and only a very few trig points
are also Passive stations. This does not include the redundant ones.

I thought I'd mentioned here before that I already have 10 figure grid
data on all the UK pillars (including several that are gone away!), and
the same thing compiled into a Garmin /img file that you can stick on
your GPS (if it supports map uploads) which is part of the 'contours'
    pack at the SMC website.

    Dave,

It might not be a plaque on them but have you had a look at the records
    at http://www.trigpointinguk.com/ ?

Lots of the inividual records have ten figure grids associated with them
which have been surveyed by trigpoint spotters. This, at least, allows
you to set up the trigpoint in your GPS before you go out and should
ease finding it. You could argue that a plaque with the ten figure grid
on the pillar would be superfluous; if you were close enough to read the
plaque then you probably wouldn't need to know the NGR that accurately!

    :-)

    Regards

    Steve

Knew about the SMC contours but has anyone seen if they are different to the

I use FUGAWI and I think the data is pretty poor.

  12. Well and truly hijacked...but thanks to those that gave me some leads. Just
to let you know that the scheme is no longer around but had a nice letter
from a woman at OS who said if I was knew of a Trig Pillar that needed some
TLC I should administer it....not before getting the land owners permission
of course. Think the land is common land but I need to find out more - went
up there last night to have a good look at it and to be honest it must be
the worst maintained that I have seen...some gits have even chipped away at
the top in order to get the trig thing off there. Now not being a master
builder I just need the right ingredients and some tools to try and make it
look better - wonder if poly filler would be any good??

Afaik Garmin don't have any contour data for the UK.

The Memory map, Fugawi, and Tracklogs contour data will be (should be)
more accurate, being derived from OS data (aerial photos etc.), however
you can't load it onto a GPS handset. The SMC data comes from a
calculation of where the contours might be based on spot heights which
are on a grid of anything up to 90m by 60m.

I don't .. I use Tracklogs and the height data displayed on the maps is
exactly the same as OS 1:25k data. The height data in their 'fly through
3D model', and what they use for calculating heights of tracks, etc. is
derived from the same NASA STRM data as the SMC website contour maps,
although it has been differently processed. It will therefore have the
    same accuracy problems.

So they just referenced on the OS map contours ??

If I draw around a hill, along the same contour, the gradient profile
is variable in ht, significantly. Obviously there should be no ht gain.

I always thought a tracing program or something would 'read' the contour
    data
    then use that.

Oh well. Now then what basemap did I use for france again ???

Off to Chamonix - 2 weeks, Pyrenees - 2weeks, Cinque Terri (great clifftop
    walking) -3 days, Dolomites - 10days. Eagles Nest/Bavaria - 3 days. Cuple o
strong beers in Brugges, home via the Zeebrugge ferry to Rosyth.

Phew, it's gonna be tough ............

Not sure what they reference .. what Garmin software (or maps, or

Ah, in that case Tracklogs (and probably Fugawi) are deriving height
data for points along the track from the DEM (Digital Elevation Model)
database, which (unless they bought the good stuff from the OS, which I
bet they didn't - tracklogs certainly didn't - not least because the OS
wants paying again every year afaik) is just repackaged NASA SRTM data.

Now if you'd trace round one of the contours =derived= from the NASA
(e.g. the ones on the SMC website) you'd likely get zero height changes
as measured by Fugawi/Tracklogs/etc. If you trace round a 'real'
contour, then everywhere it diverges from the 'derived' contour you'll
    get a height change (error).

I just tried this with Anquet. I used the 950M line on Schiehallion,
which gave me a circuit of 3.27 KM and a total ascebt of 96M. It might
be possible reduce this total ascent slightly by adding more nodes.

Anyone care to try this with Fugawi, Tracklogs or Memory Map for a
    back-to-back comparison?
