  1. Hey everyone,

I'm a XC endurance race type terrain type guy looking to upgrade from my
hardtail Specialized to something a little less painful.
    I have narrowed it down to two bike;

    1. TREK Liquid 30
    2. RockyMountain ETSX 50

I am looking for input for anyone who owns, or has ridden extensively,
either of these two... or better yet both, for some feedback.
The RM is about $1000.00 CDN more than the TREK and so far they seem pretty
comparable, with the componentry being very similar.
Of note, I am a 220 lb hockey player, thighs as thick as my head, so I need
a bike that can handle me.... hence I'm not looking at the TREK Fuel series.

Many thanks to all that can help.

I've been flogging a RM Slayer this year, which is very similar to the
ETSX, and it's been really fun. The pivot bolts loosen a little bit
every now and then but nothing serious; a few drops of locktite would
probably remedy the problem but I've just been too lazy.

I've used it to do just about everything, lots of xc, a couple 24 hour
races (4 person team), some low key freeriding, etc...

Oh, you'll understand soon enough. Do a google group search for JD and
Trek. Save yourself now by retitling this RM v. Ventana.

    Good luck.

You don't want the Liquid 30..you'd want either the 25 or 50.
I ride a Trek Liquid 25 and weigh just under 200 pounds ( but was 237 when I
bought it). The bike is tough enough for the weight, and the suspension
prevents very much wasted energy from the extra inertial mass a big muscular
rider has to control --not an issue for stickman types like JD.

You're funny. Your absolute obsession with the guy is hysterical. You had
your ass handed too you months ago in the SS thread, but still keep taking
the bait. Oviously you are incapable of just putting him in your KF, so it
seems you derive something from your usenet masochism.

    Tommy boy,
I don't see agreeing that some guy who lives and trains at altitude, is
going to be better suited to high altitude hill climbing than I am, is
having my ass handed to me. Physically JD is still a wimp, as I expect you
are ( as one of his butt sniffers). To me, mountain biking is about having
fun, and I would not want to be a pencil necked geek, just so that I could
out-ride a few people on a SS or any other bike.

JD and his butt sniffing followers can make all the bold posts they want on
the NG, where it does not mean a thing. In person, where it would mean
something, the talk would be very different. You can make all the big, bold
posts that you want about how you would talk the same, but deep down you
    know this is [censored].
I enjoyed over a decade of discussions on rec.scuba , followed by many
actual meetings in person, and this proved the point with a much more
diverse, and much larger newsgroup than AMB. You and the other little butt
sniffers can pretend to be anything and anyone you want with your Internet
posts, but when you meet people in real life, the tendency is to revert to
    real life roles and behaviors.

I like mountain biking as my favorite sport. I think the majority of people

What cracks me up is Dan's repeated behavior when
his idiocy, inconsistencies, assumptions, lack of
MTB experience, and downright goofiness is held up
    in front of him.

He always resorts to the "if this were real life,
you wouldn't say that to me because I would kick
    your ass" lameness.

    It's hilarious!

Almost as hilarious as his assumptions about JD's
size/appearance/ability to defend himself if Danny
ever tried to kick his ass, because JD has hurt
    his feelings so badly.

Danny, you need to get some help for your
    overwhelming feelings of inadequacy.

    Perhaps after you've completed a few rounds/years
of therapy you'll feel good enough about yourself
to look back and laugh at your posts.

Like so many people in AMB are doing right now.

the NG, where it does not mean a thing. In person, where it would mean
something, the talk would be very different. You can make all the big,

posts that you want about how you would talk the same, but deep down you
    know this is [censored].

Pete, while butt sniffers like you can pretend anything you want online, it
amazes me you really can't admit the difference between posting here and
how people act in real life. I can't wait till the day comes when I get the
big laugh off of actually meeting one of you butt sniffers in real life,
and enjoying the polite and reserved behavior, that would be absolutely
certain to follow from you :-)

See the bit about "assumptions" above Danny. You
    certainly are consistent.

I'm even more irreverent in person. Especially
    around buffoons like you.
