Trek 820 vs. Fuji Boulevard

It's hard to compare [censored] with [censored]!

I notice the Trek has Shimano Altus derailleur, while the
Fuji only has Shimano Tourney, which I think is a step
down. But the other parts I'm not as sure about like the
frame, front suspension (RST 191CL vs. SunTour M2000) or
the crank (SR XCC100 vs. SR NEX110) etc.

Can anyone help out with that stuff and/or suggest another
option in this price range if I'm missing something. I am
looking at those two because my LBS offers them, but there
are a couple other shops in the are I could consider.

Sounds like a good idea, much better than buying an
expensive bike and leaving it in the shed after one ride. On
the other hand thats how we get cheap spares...

Concentrate on finding a bike that fits, bad fit is more
likely to put you off than bad parts imho.

Won't be much difference to be honest, you would get a
better deal if you looked at fully rigid bikes.

I belive the rigid version of the specialised hardrock falls
in your price category and has at least one fan on this ng.

<raises hand> Yup - a fine beast at a fine price. And
wouldn't you rather be seen in the woods on a piece of
cheapness called "HardRock" than one with some poncy French
name for a road? ;-)

Seriously, the HardRock has stood up well for 3 years or so,
and has not (yet) needed any major repairs or replacements
apart from tyres. I like the rigid fork since I have been
using one for 45 years now, and at 195 lbs (14 stone-ish) I
am not exactly lightweight.

I, too, would like to suggest you look at Specialized. They
make a fine bike and have excellent customer service.
