It's too beat up for me, I'd skip it. All those scratches, scrapes and the dirty drivetrain indicate a hard life and little care. The 7.3 retails for $750 new: buying a new one, or a like-new used bike would be a better deal than this one.

FWIW. Both dhk2 & alienator have a valid perspective ...

But, 'flash' photography is less than forgiving ... and, lesser imperfections in the light of day are often exacerbated in pictures taken with a flash ... THAT isn't necessarily a bad thing ...

So, if the question had been whether or not you could do better ... that depends ... it depends on the local market AND it depends on one's perspective ...

Is $275 + the time to remedy the neglect (wipe off the dried road debris from rear derailleur & other parts + a $3.00 can of black spray paint to touch up the scratches + lube-as-necessary, etc. ) vs. another $500+ in order to buy a new bike (remember, there is sales tax if you buy a new bike at an LBS) the measure by which the particular bike should be assessed?

Certainly, for those people for whom a $300+ (MSRP) crankset probably isn't worthy of the bikes they ride, who can say that spending more isn't a better idea?!?

Certainly, In theory, you could go to a thrift store & buy a bike for under $25 and spend less than $200 to bring the thrift store bike up-to-snuff ...

And certainly, some people claim they find near mint bikes at garage sales for $50 ...

So, your immediate & near term needs should influence your decision ... If YOU are on a restricted budget & can find a better bike in better condition for the same or less money, then that is what you should certainly opt for if the alternative bikes are suitable for the type of anticipated riding you plan to do ...

One way or the other, you should probably look at the bike before making your final decision BECAUSE it will give you a benchmark against which you can judge other used bikes which you may come across if you opt not to buy it.

It takes a mighty big hit to put a dent like that in the top tube.

To the seller's credit, though, the photos are good and the bike is clean--the better to show the scratches and dents. On the other hand, the asking price is totally out of line--for another $200 you could get a shiny new one with with a factory warranty and shop support.

I like FXs, and if I were interested in this one I'd go over it really hard, especially the frame, headset, cranks, and hubs, and still pay not a penny over $160 if everything checked out.

Scratches on the fork and front QR, dent in the top tube. I suspect that it's been crashed.

Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or does he have the front wheel mounted backwards? QR on the right side of the fork??

You'd be buying that bike from someone who's basically clueless. With all those scratches and dents, it's been ridden a lot, and/or ridden hard. Probably poorly maintained. Worn drivetrain? Shifters shot? Crashed and RD bent?
