Trek 5900 headset

I tried to replace the fork with an after market fork...you can't! The headset is a special unit you can only replace through Trek. Contact your local Trek dealer, they will fill you in.

Does this mean I cannot service. I do not want to replace just service but after removing stem the fork does not slide out.

I don't know, I only know my LBS didn't even know about the special headset.

The compression ring in many threadless headsets gets stuck.A block of wood on the top of the steerer and a hammer tap,rap or blow will loosen it. The bearings are cartridg type.You don't service them,but replace them when they go bad. If it ain't broke,don't mess with it.

I would'nt pound on the fork very hard. I believe that the bottom bearing cup is actually molded into the frame. I tried to replace a fork on one of the 5xxx Treks and was not able to because of the molded cup and larger that normal race on the fork.

The bottom cup is epoxied in.That does not mean the fork does not come out in the usual way.

I'll second that...if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Riding in the rain certainly shouldn't cause any problems. The headset ought to last a very long time without failing on these bikes; no maintenance required.

To me, one of the main reasons for buying an expensive bike is to have many years of riding before the need to take anything apart...you just ride and enjoy.

One day turned the 5900 bike upside down to put in car and water ran out of headset, but still runs smooth. Have decided to leave alone. I did work on my mountain bike which I have abused for 8 years and was able to get the fork loose by hitting with the blunt end of an axe and finally came loose. The bearings which are not sealed were rusted and will replace. The compression ring was really jammed. I have always said if something does not fit u have to get a bigger hammer.
