Does any one know what the big deal is of Trans Fatty
Acids? I have heard so many negative things said about
trans fatty acids. What foods contain trans fatty acids? I
have heard some say that eating margarine is now unhealthy
and eating butter is better for you. It wasn't that many
years ago that butter was the unhealthy food choice and
margarine was the better health choice. Anyone have any
wisdom on trans fatty acids?

Here's the 10 second response: they increase the bad
cholesterol, LDL, and kill off the good cholesterol, HDL.
Amongst other things.-Chad

can normal fat. The trans double bond is a block, so trans
fats tend to hang around. The main way they're got rid of
is when they are attacked by free radicals, but this sort
of attack is what ends up making LDL into oxLDL, which is
what causes such a problem in arteries.MattLB

If a properly working digestive system breaks all eaten fats
in their basic building blocks (fatty acids and
glycerol)before absorption, then what's the difference if
the original fat is saturated, monounsaturated,
polyunsaturated, trans, hydrogenated, etc.?Here's an alternative viewpoint:

I just ordered her (Mary Enig's) book off Amazon. Hopefully the pretty
pictures convince my parents to change their eating habits. 🙂-Chad

Hi Ray,
Mary Enig holds trans fats in dim regard as well. Her
alternative viewpoint villifies them, and has for some
decades apparently, way before the establishment ever did! I
hold her in pretty high esteem.-Chad

Hi Chad,
Yes, almost everyone, especially in the alternative medicine
field, warns against them. I'm just trying to understand
/why/, in view of the way the digestive system "disassembes"
fats, and carbs and proteins, into their basic building
blocks before absorption. Maybe my understanding of
digestion is faulty.Ray

and fatty acids, it's the fatty acids which are differently
bonded. (cis, trans)
