    I also like No Doubt for riding - is that gay?

    I really like riding with my iPod because otherwise I tend to get some
    song that I don't know but one line of lyrics stuck in my head, so I
    keep repeating that line over and over for hours.

    No, no, no. The Rapture is a out and out carbon copy of Gang of Four,
    except for that one Big Star tune they ripped off... but that doesn't
    mean that I don't love that record, too.

    would hope that someone older would refrain from using played out
    adolescent expressions and move on to more sophisticated ways of

    appreciate music other than rock and roll, like classical music and
    jazz. Not that there's anything wrong with rock and roll. I have

    very little of the rock music I listen to has been produced in the
    last 20 years. Sorry, but to me the last really great rock band is U2

    Yeah, i used to be into classical. that was a couple decades ago when I was a classical flautist, and was all into those French impressionists like Faure, Debussey, Poulenc and the like because they had all those great flute solos. Now you hear them in all the malls in stores like Victoria's secret.

    The reason I got sick of classical is because of the huge amount of snobbery involved. I hated that an artist was judged on their interpretation of a piece against what is considered the "correct" interpretation. How can an interpretation be wrong?? It's all so narrow minded and judegemental. I got sick and tired of it and picked up the guitar and began to rock.

    But, I still get goosebumps when I hear Smetana's symphonic poems...

    In short, dude, lighten up.

    for example, janeane garofolo was explaining in one of her standup
    routines a few years ago why she goes to starbucks for coffee instead of
    a hip cafe- she said she went to a weezer concert, but it was "too loud"
    and she had to leave. so now she just meekly lines up with all the other
    soccer moms at starbucks. (she didn't use the term "soccer mom", hope
    she won't mind that i added it in)

    Well, in 200 years some may argue about the correct "interpretation" of
    Zappa.
    There's plenty of flaming on both rec.music.classical and
    rec.musical.classical.guitar. But these days it's mostly
    politics--kinda like here.

    True, that's fairly standard. It might be because as you get older, you
    start to have the patience to pay attention to more than just the most
    visceral aspects of the music you listen to.

    Well, *commercial* rock has been pretty poor for quite a while (in
    general - there are exceptions, of course). But I think there's been a lot
    of good, inventive music come along in the last twenty. And there's been a
    lot of stuff that you've heard done a jillion times before, but is still
    done exceptionally well. It all depends on what you're looking for.
