After reading through this entire thread, all I can conclude is that
bike riders have awful taste in music.

In any case, if it's music to give your legs strength you want, try
the second movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. You'll not only ride
faster, you'll also develop an urge to invade Poland.

I get my #s mixed up - is that Ode to Joy? I recently inflicted a
20-minute version on my indoor cycling class. Most of them didn't think
    it sucked.

It's got pretty good pacing for an interval session.

Of course, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries is always good for some
    added speed.

Indoors, I use it to pace a "climb."

No, no, no. The Rapture is a out and out carbon copy of Gang of Four, except for that one Big Star tune they ripped off... but that doesn't mean that I don't love that record, too.

Thought of another one: The Flaming Lips - I think I was on constant Robot mode for 6 months after downloading that one from iTunes.

Just so you all know, I broke my arm trying to ride a 8 foot drop on a hardtail, pulling a full on superman mid-air. It didnt' work out, but I looked really cool doing it.

I did not fall off my bike while executing a u-turn and encountering the 2.5cm of toe overlap on my 'cross bike. Nope, that's not what happened. Not me. Never.

    Dude, you rock.

On the music thing, there are two sorts of situations where I listen
to music . In the first I'm more demanding. One is for riding indoors,
with intervals and such. Then it's usually various forms of dance or
electronic music -- Crystal Method, Propellorheads, Utah Saints,
Prodigy, Shamen, Sugarcubes plus techno remixes of hip-hop stuff. And
some stuff from the 80s that might be embarrasing to mention by name
    now. Plus White Zombie

Outdoors, just riding, it's different. I actually listen to the radio
if I can get a decent rock or hip-hop or dance-oriented station.
Otherwise any of those forms of music. Esp good classic rock, good
alternative rock or even metal. And good hip-hop and r&b.

not riding, but i still listen to music when i train. can't listen to
anything "real" though, can't multitask. real music takes up all of my
meagre brain, plus, i like candy 🙂

listed in xtra gay format, just for big gun, some songs on my training list:

psychedelic furs- inside you, the time moves, and she don't fade- the
ghost in you, she don't fade.

spoon- we go thru all the same lines and sell out to appease, but go to
sleep in a bed of lies. i've made my own more than once or twice.

luna- and now i realize that i'm living like a trucker does, although i
haven't got the belly. and though she followed me to california all the
way, i only want to watch the telly.

eve 6- every body wants to try, with a smile and a promise. well, i
    promise NOT to try...

    carbon leaf- i'm a saddened man, i'm a broken boy, i'm a toddler with a
complex toy. i've fallen apart, since the ambush on your heart

everclear- she'd do anything to get me what i need for my disease, she'd
    do anything.

carrie akre- it's a push and pull, hand over hand. it's in what you wear
and what you demand. yes, a wild one, crystal clear. got an open mind
    there will be no fear.

ben harper- is this really living? sometimes it's hard to tell. or is
this just a kinder gentler hell?

big pig- all my life i wanted to fly, but i don't have the wings and i
    wonder why- i can't breakaway.

bruce springstein- you spend your life waiting for a moment that just
don't come. don't waste your time waiting.

nick gilder- hot child in the city- hot child in the city- running wild
looking pretty- hot child in the city..

lois- if i were you i would come back and give us all something to do.
i look at your face and remember- everything about you.

he asked her "please stop quoting rod mckuen in your postcards, can't
understand it anymore. and if you're gonna read your poetry aloud to me,
i'll have to shove you to the door..."

here's a random list of what I listen to on my pod while warming up for
races. Not so sure they would be best for long boring miles :-) Cold
    Nor-Cal. Hah!

My eclectic list in no particular order:

    Sublime:
    Doin' Time
    Same in the End
    Date Rape
    Modest Mouse
    Float On
    Chili Peppers:
    Around the World
    Californication
    No Doubt:
    Hella Good
    Hey Baby
Oi to the World (yeah I know it's a christmas song, but it's really
    cool)
    Rancid:
    Ruby Soho
    Nirvana:
    Breed
    White Stripes:
    Seven Nation Army
    Black Math
    The Hardest Button
Fell in Love With a Girl
    Beck:
    Sexx Laws
    Green Day:
    Nice Guys Finish Last
    U-2
Beautiful Day (I skip this one if it's not)
    (gonna add "Vertigo" soon)
    Ramones
    I Wanna be Sedated
    Save Ferris:
    Goodbye
    Nelly
Shake Ya Tailfeather (I don't know why I like this one- maybe cuz it was
always playing in the gym when I was lifting)

There are a few more that I've downloaded but not put on the pod yet. Can't
remember what they are right now.

Working on adding some more energetic or angry or powerful stuff...

    Suz-

Email me and I'll bring a CD of MP3s to the ride Sat.

Among my favorites already installed are Joe Satriani's "Surfing with the

at 90rpm's, and "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood..

Those of us of a certain age will find inspiration from the 'Breaking
    Away' soundtrack.

If you are going motorpacing you will want the overture from Rossini's
'Barber of Seville'. Remember, big rings are for pussies.

That's if you are using a semi as the motor. If you are motorpacing a
scooter you'll prefer the first movement from Mendelssohn's 'Italian
    Symphony'.

If you are feeling frisky after the ride, the serenade is Friedrich von
    Flotow's 'Martha'.

Having said that, I must confess that I did see a Cutter on Alpe d'Huez.
I pondered kicking him in the balls as I had been requested to do. He
was eating ice cream, suspecting nothing.

In the end I declined. And it has been haunting me ever since. There
is nothing so difficult to live with as regret.
